OK I know this sounds really stupid, but I need some gunpowder, or other sort of ignitor that can be lit using matches, but can also ignite thermite, I have an idea to make a thermite grenade .... any other suggestions other than gunpowder such as KNO[sub]3[/sub] ( Potasium Nitrate ) or magnesium ( sure as hell wont light with matches )

thanks,

Diachi

That sound safe mate...

Isn't termite that stuff that literally melts metals into nothing and causes ice to explode?

You're in Scotland, dude! You KNOW you can't be trusted with such dangerous substances.

You need to move to Bolivia. I hear they use gunpowder as an ingredient in the hootch down there.

Thinking about blowing up the neighbor's car?[smiley=evil.gif]

There, I fixed it for you.

;D Nah just want to have a little fun, maybe later if I get a chance though [smiley=evil.gif]

Getting pretty boring, butane cans just aint enough any more, all you get is some flames and a nice bang, ohh and some shrapnel.

So I thought instead of blowing stuff up, I would just melt right through it, no problem lighting the thermite, but making a hand grenade with a pull cord is slightly harder ::)

Gunpowder can be purchased at any gunshop that sells reloading supplies. It comes in various sized cans that are sold by how many pounds of powder you desire. Or if you have any basic chemistry schooling, you can make it your self. That way, you can vary the amounts of the different ingredients to make the powder burn slower, or if you choose to, you can vary the recipe a bit and make yourself some flash powder, which will ignite if you look at it the wrong way ;D When I was in high school, I was a teaching assistant in the chem. lab & had access to the store room where they kept ALL the chemicals in bulk quantity. Needless to say, some of my friends & I had a great time mixing up some pretty potent explosive devices. I even made some contact explosives a few times, very safe & stable to handle while kept damp/let it dry out though, & it would explode if a mosquito landed on one of the dry iodine crystals. Somebody signed my senior yearbook as "the person most likely to blow up the world some day" now why would they write that ? :-? phoenix77/rob 8-)

If you were to make it yourself rather than buy it, would you need a ball mill to actually make decent quality powders?

Please don't make this grenade idea of yours, I used to play with flash powder and stuff like that and I had a few close calls, it's not worth risking your safety for a few booms. I'm not kidding about this, I've learned not to mess with this stuff from personal experience :-[ If you want to use thermite don't make a bomb out of it, just use it as is and you will be a lot safer, if you follow all safety precautions of course!

Anyway gun powder (black powder) will not be able to light thermite, but a mix of 5 parts KNO3, 3 parts S, and 2 parts fine Al will be able to easily light thermite and can be lit using regular fuse.

You have to use a ball mill if you want good quality black powder, most other methods make sucky BP.

Am I the only one that sees a conflict with these two statements?

Peace,

Yeah I know how to make black powder already ...

Hmm might just use magnesium as a fuse, unless anyone knows where to buy fuse ?

And ok styro I wont make a grenade, but ill order in some KNO[sub]3[/sub] and some sugar so I can make a smoke grenade, atleast that is less likely to blow off any limbs.

;D

I've had a few close calls aswell, especially when it comes to molten plastics and explosions :-/ many a scar from that.

Ohh well im off to bed now. ;)

Or go for a cheap option, you may have already done this.

Instead of chucking deodorant or any pressurized cans onto a fire, tape a sparkler around it. All you have to do then is light it and chuck it wherever you want a nice big boom.

oxy fuel torch will work. also, check ebay. ::)

I'm not sure buying giant 100lb cylinders of compressed gas on ebay is such a good idea... 100lbs of anything is bound to be ridiculously expensive to ship, but compressed gasses, especially oxygen, require special "dangerous goods" shipping which costs way more. No, ebay would be a bad place to look for an oxy-acetylene torch... maybe a local welding supply shop would be a better idea... though still, I would be scared shitless by the very thought of bringing compressed gas tanks near burning thermite.

The standard way of igniting thermite is using magnesium ribbon. You can buy this off ebay or any chemical supply house. I know you can also get it from edmund scientific and united nuclear, though their prices will tend to be higher than most.
