ok so i had this toshiba a200 that had broken, so i decided to pull the cd drive out witch is,

a V000101750 - Toshiba Satellite A200, A205 Series Super-Multi Laptop HD-DVD & DVD±RW Drive.

would it be any good, and how would i set it up.
 





If it is HDDVD it should have a 405nm diode in it which is more than enough good from my point of view...

Well it's probably going to have multiple diodes in it. The 405nm and either an ir and a red guy or an ir-red combo. So you are going to have to determine what diode is what first. Read up on the different diodes and get/make yourself a driver and go from there to test them.
 
Nope. Nobody. Unless it's one of the common sleds that people deal with, your in uncharted territory so get to dismantling. It's unlikely anyone here can tell you anything other than what the pinout for 660's are if it has a normal 5.6mm TO18 diode in it. (which no one likely will, since that information is EASILY found with a search) If it's some other package, your really on your own.

Being an HD READER... the 405 isn't going to be of any power worth messing with. The only diode worth extracting would be the 660nm red... IF it's in a normal TO18 package.
 
Unless of course he wants a little 405 pointer thing...I mean maybe its just me, but if I had a 405 diode I would probably harvest it no matter the power....but that may be because I don't have one yet
 
10mW of 405 isn't much though heh There's a reason the $9 chinese 5mW 405 pens are all overspec to nearly 50mW... It takes that much to have any kind of real visibility whatsoever.

Plus you can get PHR sleds for under $10.. and get 100mW
 
which laser? The 780nm, 660nm, or 405nm? What kind of power meter were you using? Pics?
