What laser related advances do you see in the next 5-10 years? Cheaper and more efficient dpss blue/yellow lasers? Actual blue/green laser diodes that are affordable? 200mw+ blu-rays for <$150?
What do you see the military using lasers for in the next 10-15years? Are burning laser weapons practical enough to be used in actual combat or will they exist only in government labs and pop-sci magazines?

Feel free to add your opinions to this topic. I'm trying to get this new forum section going.
 





I don't see any DPSS lasers in the future. Laser diodes FTW, in all colours, including UV. :D

My Fingers are crossed for the laser TV, it's unbeatable in performance I've heard of, and I don't see why it couldn't do an awesome laser show too. :o
THAT + Blu-Ray (or better... ::))!!
 
i hope researchers start building laser computing (processors or interconnections) for the masses..



i dont really think that there will be many new discoveries or innovations, just everything becoming cheaper and being more available



regarding the military.... i dont know if we have the technology to use portable lasers for combat. you know, the worst drawback we have with everything is heat and BATTERIES.

there's no way we can HURT somebody with a very high powered laser that can last at least more than 5 minutes running on batteries and being the device itself handheld and portable.
 
-Holograms using laser technology.
-weaponry, for offence and defense will continue to evolve.
-Near future, (as previously discussed here) New solid state materials for high-powered laser POINTERS (not advanced star-wars planet destroyers) for more efficient power gain, alternate colors, and perhaps cost feasible.

As our knowledge evolves and our experiences with the only matter of the 4th state, perhaps even lightsabers or energy shields (similar concept).

P.S. - Glad to see "Science of lasers" become a forum. :)
 
Bit of a dream, but the day I see RGB scanners in the size of a pen will be enough to complete my life...

lol, so the Man list should become:

Food
Pee/Poo
Sleep
Sex
Lasers









hm....holograms......if they were monochromatic i'd believe somebody could actually do it this decade..
i hope they do, cant wait to see Obi-Wan like the jedis did :P
 
in the near future (this year, next year), i think handhelds are just going to get more powerful, and cheaper. So blue and yellow will become more affordable, etc. I also think that RGB pointers could actually be accomplished easily within the next 10 years.

Also, someone has to make the ULTIMATE laser pointer. Im talking a laser thats like 10 watts, and it has a little dial on the side for changing the color of the beam. it also has to be waterproof, space proof, and even lava proof (just in case, you never know). It also has a mini fog machine on the top for making the beam more visible ;D For under 100 bucks of course.
 
For visible laser diodes, I can see blue and green diodes being mass produced for use in new RGB technologies sometime in the future. I don't see orange or yellow laser diodes becoming available because there is no real use for them at the moment.

IMO, blue diodes are getting more attention than green. They can be used for mass storage devices, green arent really better than blue diodes, so I don't see greenies getting cheaper than blue (in percentage) over the years.

Orange diodes that put out a nice fiery color would be incredibly cool. I suppose you could always combine Red and green to get orange.

I did some research tonight. Wait 'til you see what's coming up in the next month! -- self contained blu-ray modules (10mm dia.)-- 4mm self contained red modules . . . Neither are "high powered, but dayum!

10mm modules? wow.

what does "self-contained" mean regarding diodes?

10mm [highlight]modules [/highlight]-- I was talking about modules that contain diodes.

Self-contained modules means that the driver and diode are already included in the module (like the 5mW aixiz red modules). You just stick them onto a battery (just like the red modules) and you have 10mW of 405nm laser light!

Oh, and green modules shouldn't be far behind. Micro sized "chip" green lasers have already been developed.
