I have a working blu-ray diode in an Aixiz housing with a rkcstar microdrive. Are there any good pen hosts you could recommend for the diode/driver, provided I'll be powering the sucker with 2 AAA Li-ion 3.7V batteries?

There is an MXDL flashlight that you can use 3 AAA batteries in, that would work well the with rkcstr driver and your 3.7V AAA's.

here it is

edit: i just saw that you wanted a pen host... i don't know any good ones of those, just flashlights. maybe someone else will know one.

I have made four pen host style blurays all work well with rckstr drives
with two 10440 batteries from 80 ma up to 150 ma ;D

That's great! Can you point me to one that I might be able to use AAA batteries with?

Are you US or UK based?

If you are in the uk you could try the host I used here....

I know US based members have had trouble sourcing these hosts.

I have also used this one modified with a heatsink for a blu ray burner....

US of A!

Thanks for the suggestion, though. Anyone else have some ideas? Surely there have been more attempts at a pen-style blu-ray other than drlava's leadlight?

The newwish lasers, like from DX. I've seen a tutorial on here somewhere, probably in experiments and modifications, on how to do it with the set-up you're talking about, rkcstr and 2x10440. The 5mW newwish you can get from DX for <$20, and it looks nice as far as pen lasers go.

Aha! I have to thank spyderz for bringing this back to the top post in Experiments and Modifications where I could find it.

This is a tutorial on turning the <$20 green newwish-style pointers, from DX and other places, into blu-ray (or red burner) pen lasers, courtesy of rubberband. His diagrams are really quite nice. It uses the rkcstr driver and the 2x10440, just like you mention.

Good luck!
