Reputation system: meaning & value

I don't always use up my rep each day and have a hard time repping some people or so it seems, but I'm going to try to rep more each day, it's fun.

To me the rep points are a way of people saying your comments are well received! But some use it as a way of making others feel like crap and that their comments dont matter. We as a community need to stop this bs
 
Well of course we rep comments that we like, you should do the same.
 
I somehow missed out on the whole VG thing. I know he got banned and I guess he has be caught trolling. But, for awhile, he seemed like any other member here. But, I didn't really know him well at all.
 
When I go to rep someone for a their contribution sometimes I get the spread more rep message but I don't get the chance to leave a message. Couldn't it just get added as a zero rep kudos type of thing. It's a good back channel for communication without cluttering up the thread. One of the neat aspects to using the rep function instead of a visitor message is that the rep UI links to the relevant content. I could really care less about the rep count. Join date is more relevant than rep count IMO. Rep count doesn't seem to serve it's intended purpose anymore. It's about the post count to membership timeline ratio. Rep can be given with a backhanded compliment in the message. So what was more relevant the rep or the message? What's the point of giving rep without a comment?

When using my iPhone I usually don't leave a comment, fat fingered on my phone which is what I use over half the time here.
 
I guess you can always go to the person's profile and leave a message. I get them all the time. It shows you that something is there in the upper right corner of the page, so I always check. I don't see the mods trying to rewrite the rep system to make it easier to leave a message.
 
Agreed. All I can do is give a nudge and put it out there. Any way you cut it it's still Swiss cheese.
 
10,000 reps still haven't bought me a single cup of coffee! A million won't either, they aren't anything but for fun. You can have good rep and rip someone off, it's been done many times here, so counting on the rep isn't a good idea.

Coffee for rep, now wouldn't that be nice? Glad we have free coffee at work... :D
 
We should set up a fund to buy a coffee for individuals who reach rep benchmarks, but with the current inflation, we would soon be buying for everyone.

Seeing as I mostly drink free coffee, does that mean I can just transfer the LPF coffee fund to my laser fund? :D :p
