You can buy good red diodes for cheap, plus they will be brand new and you can power them with a pair of AA batteries in series, the internal resistance of the laser diode will usually allow you to get away with it but it could shorten it's lifespan, or just buy a cheap driver.
Just remember safety 1st, any laser over 5mw can damage our eyes.
Now a 639nm will be much more visible than a 650nm and you can also get more out of it with a glass lens rather than an acrylic.
