Greetings from Louisville, KY, my name is David. Ive been viewing this forum for approximately 4 days now and it seems extremely legitimate and trustworthy. Ive been researching and reading up on Lasers with greater power than 5mW, such as 50mW, 200mW and even 1-5W lasers and they're very interesting and nifty. Although not a toy in the least bit, I'd love to collect a couple of them myself.

Hey James. Welcome. Check out Survival Lasers USA for proper eye protection and read up on safety topics. I'll suggest https://sites.google.com/site/dtrlpf/home/diodes/osram-plp450-450nm-laser-diode for your first blue laser. It's a gem. You will need soldering supplies. Just the typical stuff nothing over the top.

I am sure you will fit in just fine here. My suggestion is too stick to a low Class 3B for now, and work upwards. Class 4's are dangerous. I started out with a 1mW 532nm pointer (Class 2). Got used to that. Then I modified it, putting it into the low Class 3B range. This was enough power to appreciate the dangers but not pose too much of a risk. After I felt confident of safe use, I progressed to a Class 4 which poses new dangers that you have to get used too. The other thing to note is danger is not linear according to power. It can not be assumed that once you have got a 1W, you can go straight to a 5W as it is only 5x as dangerous. That isn't true. As the power goes up, the faster the danger curve rises. There are many experienced members here that do not feel safe operating an 7W NUBM44 because of this. Stay safe and enjoy.

That would definitely include me haha. There's no way in hec you would ever catch me with a 7W laser, way too much power for me

It is a scary laser. But I do enjoy a bit of danger. 
But what scares me more than the laser itself, is the prospect of a inexperienced user getting hold of one.
