i wanna do an mxdl but i dont know what my best bet is for drivers, and power. help is appreciated. ;D
 





What diode do you want to use? Do you want a small driver, a big one? Do you want to build one? Buy one? Be more specific.
 
im using the sony 16x dvd burner diode from stonetek. i want to use a small driver that will o right on to the diode inside the module. i was thinking something like drlavas flexdrive you know? that size
 
A flexdrive won't fit inside an aixiz module. Get a rkcstr driver instead. This isn't a boost driver so you're going to need more than 6v to power it.
 
ok. will the rckstr drive work for the MXDL mod and im using 2 RCR123 rechargeable batteries. ive been told those put out the right voltage
 
I was also wondering about the best driver to use with the Stonetek Aixiz/Sony combo and Jayrob's heatsink. Is it better to try to build up a driver on the circuit board that comes with the MXDL or should I try using rkcstr's driver? I'm thinking that the larger driver would allow the whole unit to run a bit cooler, but maybe that's not an issue given that I'll be using the heatsink? What current output is recommended for good reliability?

That's for you to decide, with the big heatsink, I don't think heat will be a problem. Decide whether you want to build a driver, or buy one. As for the current, Mike did a test for 14 hours driving the diode at 400mA and it worked fine, but I don't recommend you go over 350mA, just to be on the safe side.

Thanks chido, I'll probably get the rkcstr driver @ 350mA. If I could clarify, will I be able to use either 2x3.0V or 2x3.6V CR123 batteries?
 
You'd be better off using the rechargeables. The normal 3v CR123s will work but I don't think they would last too long.
The regulator in rkcstr's driver needs 2.25v to work and at 350mA your SenKat diode should be pulling around 3v, so in total you need at least 5.25v to power your driver. If you use two CR123s you'll have a total of 6v but when that drops down more than .75v the regulator won't be able to send enough voltage to the LD, making the current decrease, and thus making your laser weaker and weaker as the voltage keeps dropping. So you're safe but only when your voltage is above 5.25v, if it drops from there then you're in trouble.
But, if you use two rechargeable CR123s you have a total of 7.2v, which means they have to drop 1.95v before the voltage gets down to 5.25v and your driver starts dropping out.
So in short, the CR123s will give you some runtime, but the rechargeable CR123s will give you around 2.6 times more runtime than the regular CR123s.
