okay, my 30 mW green laser has finally arrived! (after two long months of shipping T_T)

Okay, so I have 2 questions right now.

1) if i'm using this for outdoor night star pointing/beam viewing, will i need goggles? I hope not, because i've heard you can't see the beam if you have goggles on.

2) is there any way to reduce the 30 mW to around 5mW temporarily so i could point it around inside, then later restore it?

Thanks :D

For inside use... you could place a Neutral Density filter in front
of the aperture...

Honestly a 30mW should be fairly safe for indoor use, provided you arent pointing it at potentially reflective surfaces or staring at the dot closely on a white wall.

Honestly:thinking:.... using a >5-10mW Laser indoors without proper
Laser protection is asking for trouble... unless you house is void
of anything that can reflect a Laser beam back to you directly
or indirectly... and all the walls and floor are painted flat black...
Better Safe than sorry....IMO

@ SilverSliver....
You can pickup a set of 3 different ND filters on ebay...

46mm Neutral Density ND2 ND4 ND8 ND 2 4 8 Filter Set on eBay.ca (item 390242248015 end time 18-Apr-11 06:30:22 EDT)

A Neutral Density filter used for cameras can be used with
Lasers... You will need to test just how much each different
ND Filter reduces your lasers power.
The link I gave you sells 3 different Optical filter densities...

A Filter.... Filters out some of the Laser's Power...

1) No.

2) Practically you don't need that. 30mw inside your house can't endanger you unless you are pointing it directly to your eyes or to a mirror. With such power there is no danger from reflective surfaces.

^^^^ ignore this. this guy obviously does not know the first thing of safety or what it takes to achieve it. Listen to Lasersbee.

ps.. listen to me telling you to listen to Lasersbee lol

Lol, okay. So if i take a camera filter and put it in front of my laser, by how much will it be lowered?

its hard to say becaus there are so many variables. if you plan on having lasers in your life for a while i would recommend getting a laser power meter so that way you always know what power you are at.

michael.

Hmm. Probably not :P

I think i have some filters, actually.

Also, my laser isn't very focused, is there any way to increase the focus?

Rather than putting a ND filter on your Laser....
it would make more sense to put Laser Safety Goggles
in front of your eyes...

Jerry

i dont know what laser you have. so i cant really say if you can focus it. if there is a thing on the front that you can easily spin that has a lens in it the you can focus it. but greens aren't usually focusable, although as of lately it seems some mfgs are making them. can you post a link to the exact laser you bought.

michael.

@Jerry, i want a filter because i have others in my house, especially some smaller kids, and i don't want to hurt their eyes by accident.

@Michael, okay, judging by what you said, i doubt i can focus mine. Mine is just a cheap laser from DX. This is the one i bought.
