Ok When i turn my laser on for a split second its very bright then it dims immediatley can anyone tell me what might be going on with my laser?

its a bit vague what kind of laser?

I would bet the diode got damaged in shipping but dont take my word on it.

contact the support from where you got it is my suggestion, but im a noob here so.....

try charging the batteries or new batteries

also what temp is ambient temp where it is being operated.

As Reddish said, you are bieng quite vague.

What wavlenth is the laser? What its powered by? What driver does it use? Is it homemade? Is it bought? if so what site? got a link?

You need to provide as much information as possible, else our answers will be just like your question: vague.

I assume you have a green laser, since you posted it in this section, this problem is a common issue of a damaged pump diode. however without more information thats about as usefull as my advice gets.

Ok i got it from ebay so i didn't expect it to be the best laser ever its a 532nm 5mw green laser and its uses 2 aaa batteries to power it. The Power button does seem a bit unaligned by that i mean the chip is not properly fit with the button if you get what im saying hopefully this makes a little bit of sense im new at this sorry for my spelling and my punctuation.
 
$5 greens vary a bit in quality, and there is not much to do about it.

There are treads on how to buy a good green laser.
 
Likely a problem with the power button mechanism. Also sometimes stretching out the spring a little helps. It's a very common issue with cheapie greens. One of my drawers has 4 dead pen lasers to attest to this.

I have a pen with a great diode, but can't take it apart, would love to get it repaired though. Some of the pen hosts you can take apart to fix, others not so much.
 
It is possible, perhaps it is set too high and overheat the crystals quickly.
Do you have any measuring instruments?
Try check the tailcap current.
 
no i dont:( but if i do pot mod it my laser is different then the on the videos you see on youtube on pot modding. My laser has a black plastic lense under the cap and i think the diode or chip whichever its called screws out from the middle, but cant screw it out because of some plastic piece under the foam wont let it unscrew sorry if this doesnt make any sense :| could you give me any info on to go about taking the actual laser out of the casing
 
When it first powers on the brightness is amazing for a 5mw. it just makes me mad because i want it to stay that bright lol. but when it dims its still kinda bright but nowhere near the brightness from when you first power it.
 
As far as I have seen, the cheap ebay lasers with the black plastic lens thing are
glued together, so the only way I was able to get to the module of one was to "peel"
away the pen itself.:eek:
Now I can put that module into someplace else, but the original pen is gone.

Cheap greenies starting off bright and then gowing dim is very common. Personally, I believe it's the pump
diode that gets hot and shifts wavelength a bit, and so the crystals absorption is much less efficient.
 
If you can't press the module out, you will likely have to peel off the metal tube :(
 
Ok thanx guys glad i found this site. :) lots of help ill just have to deal with it. will for sure get it off a different site next time. who would you guys suggest? ive been looking for a high powered one. i live in the U.S.

How would you advise is the easiest way to do that? I have a very good diode stuck in a pen where I can't push it out.

Be careful, the metal edges are sharp.

Thanks! I don't know why but somehow It didn't really occur to me to use larger tools or a cutter, the metal is pretty soft.

Can't wait to pick up a cutter tomorrow... brother keeps "borrowing" my tools.
