Kip kays laser flashlight hack?? what?

That's right around where he screws everything up by not using a driver. You can ignore the part between 00:53 to 00:57 and instead follow one of the guides here on the site... It will let your laser last longer than five minutes without burning out.. If you use a proper current regulated driver you should expect it to last thousands of hours. If you follow the terrible advice in that video your laser may not turn on at all, it may last five or ten minutes, or it may last a week, in any case, it's very foolish.

Well, you're going to need to put a driver between the batteries and the laser diode.. This will limit the current going to the laser. The problem is that lasers, like LED's have an internal resistance that lowers with heat... So, the laser warms up, its resistance is lowered, it draws more current, causing it to heat up more, causing it to draw more current, leading to a thermal runaway situation and poof, your laser is dead.

Here's a tutorial on how to build a driver: http://laserpointerforums.com/f42/diy-homemade-laser-diode-driver-26339.html
You can also buy premade ones from the buy/sell/trade section of the forum.. The two most commonly used ones are rkcstr's microdrive (6-12 volts) and drlava's flexdrive (3-5 volts).

Here's a list of tutorials which show you how to put it all together: http://laserpointerforums.com/f51/compiled-list-tutorials-36820.html

And here's another big post (you know, the thread that says READ THIS BEFORE POSTING) that covers all the basics as well as a bunch of frequently asked questions, such as "I saw KipKay's laser flashlight hack, can I have some help?" - http://laserpointerforums.com/f36/basic-faqs-read-before-posting-38275.html

You could have saved me some time by simply reading the forum, these topics are posted in stickies at the top of the board so people will see them, hopefully read them, and not ask the same questions that everyone asks, every single day.
