Just bought an Aixiz 635nm 10mW Module

Just ordered an Aixiz 635nm 10mW module. I want to work on a simple nice looking housing for it then do a review on the module. If I get something together that works well and looks decent I will post up a howto on it so others can follow. I expect it may take a week or so to get the module though given past experince ordereding from Aixiz.
 





i just got a couple of those today, too :) with cross generators, so that i have fun optics to play around with lol...one is for me, one is a gift to senkat for being wonderful n helping me out lots!
 
Oh cool! Let me now how they compare to your AtlasNova. I was tempted to get the one from Atlasnova, but thought I would go for a little more power! Hopefully I can throw together some kind of decent looking tube enclosure for it.
 
a large clicker pen might work? design it so you can use the clicker to turn it off and on that would be neat
 
So you plan to leave the module as is?

I was thinking of removing the LD and replacing the small circuit board with one of Dae's circuits so I could adjust the current and see if these 635's have any headroom left in them beyond the advertised 10mW

Ok...Maybe I'll have to get two of them.. ;)

I just got an email today that it shipped. Aixiz sure does takes their time to ship out don't they? I'm not to sure about taking it apart at $30 seeing as I have only just now built my own red out of an old DVD burner and would proly screw it up in the process. I think I will be content with 8mW of 635nm seeing how rare they are. I will certainly take some pics though!
 
senkat seems to think he can get 20mW out of one of those 10mW 635nm modules. you'll have to ask him for the details, but if it works 20mW of 635nm will be neat!!!
 
That might intrigue me to experiment a little! Double the output sounds real good. I have have to admit though I'm kinda dissappointed with my AtlasNova 5mW. Maybe I got a bum unit, but mine isn't much brighter and my <5mW 650nm red. Also, there is not much color difference at all. Another thing that is annoying is that it projects more of a line than a dot. It's not as noticable at a distance but you can really see it close up. I plan to do a review on my untit and post up some pics when I get to feeling better. Bad headaches all week... :'(
 
Typically, increasing output on the directly injected red diodes leads to a quick death. These diodes are designed to output a certain power. (the rated power) Increasing the output (on reds) usually consists of increasing the voltage, thus the quick death. I'm not one to discourage experimentation, but good luck.
 
surely the original rating depends partly on the cooling of the module? same with overclocking a CPU - it may fry or be unstable, unless you add extra cooling, then it can work fine.

jasturbo, most of that doesn't sound right - the dot is kind of a rectangle shape yes, as with most low power red diodes i've seen, but the rest - the colour difference is not meant to be huge, but it is the difference between a cherry-red and a slightly orangey-red, kind of like the colour of the lit end of a cigarette. it's certainly very noticable to me. as for not being much brighter, that really surprises me. are you sure you didn't order the class II (ie <1mW) one by accident? can you see a beam in darkness? (it's pretty hard to see on mine, but putting the laser by the side of my head, up near my eyes - pointing away obviously! - lets me clearly see it)
 
I ordered class IIIa and that's what it says on the sticker but I definitly can not see any kind of beam...not even a hint. I was expecting not a huge difference but a big one. I was reading all kinds of reviews that indicated there was a large difference in brightness and color from the 650nm. Maybe I'll send an email to Atlasnova to see what they think.
 
yeah, it should definitely be a lot brighter than a 650. only other thing i can think is maybe you ordered a 650 by mistake? they do look identical apart from the wavelength written on the label so... yeah, if all else fails email AtlasNova and/or get it laser metered by someone. hope it all works out!
 
I'm a little pissed at Aixiz right now. I just got my 635nm module in and it is labled 6mW on the package. They advertised 10mW, I paid for 10mW, and even the invoice says 10mW but the label on the part says 6mW. I tested it out and it is only marginally brighter than the AtlasNova 5mW. Also, the line effect is even more promonent in this module. I sent them an email and asked them to fix my order so we will see what they say.
 
senkat has tested one of these modules now - running at spec - and it gave 12.7mw!!! :)
 
Those AixiZ 10mW modules were designed for CW operation at 5.5mW - 8mW. That's why they're labeled 6mW. It is sort of false advertising since their design spec doesn't go beyond 8, but you can push them to 10mW just fine under normal pointing duty cycles.

well as i said, SenKat tested out a couple of these modules just the other day, and without pushing it at all above spec it was outputting 12.7mW...so i'm happy with them :)
