GB: 473nm diode information / giveaway

I haven't been keeping up on this lately because school has been killer, but it's great to see you have this diode up and lasing! You are really pushing that thing! I only have mine at 79mA.

I still need to build my other diodes into pointers and sell them off here. I need some money for school...
 





255mA is the threshold for the 480nm line to appear, they are noticeably different in hue to my eye. The combined wavelengths are only slightly visually different from 473nm.

The second line changes wavelength quite a bit from 255-300mA

How am I to proceed with the spectrometer readings? Take note of both lines?

I am really confused as to why the diode is doing this. I guess that's why they don't rate these diodes for use over 150mA :p


Photos taken at 310mA, the diode is most definitely lasing, and going strong.

This one visually shows the different wavelengths, the hue is off though. The left line looks identical to 473nm.

I can find a DSLR this weekend and get some good photos shot in raw to show the differences.

Okay, we now know that this diode is most certainly producing two coherent wavelengths, about 5.5nm apart.

Now, to find out how and why. Zraffleticket found a small yellow line in his 520nm diode laser, but it was very weak. These two lines are of similar intensities. What is going on here? :confused:
 
wanna kill a 520 again? I'm a DPSS guy so I unfortunately cant offer much help as to why a diode is lasing two lines, both nearly as strong as the other. That shouldnt happen haha
 
Did you say yellow line in 520? Dafuq? We need to talk more often Raffle. I need to know about these things :p

Yeah, I think its been pushed far enough. You need to post a master list of every bodies ticket nums before you get dave over here with a drawing so there won't be any confusion about who won.

Even though we all want the diode to live, I'm glad you didn't puss out and take it easy because of the giveaway. We never would have known about the second line!

Going to wait till the weekend when I can get some better photos before we draw, gives people time to request other tests as well before we call it quits :p
 
Ok, that second line is totally freaking beautiful. Major props to you ARG for not being scared to really test the diode. This test makes me desire seeking out more of these diodes however unlikely that may be.

On another note I am freaking loving this system of GB diode tests. Buy a diode, test it extensively and raffle it off. I think we should do this for more diodes. Data this accurate would still be invaluable for diodes that we use on a regular basis. Then lucky people would get free diodes, the site would make more donations from extra proceeds(extra could even be added in intentionally), and our understanding on the operating specs of diodes will become greater.

Also, thanks again ARG for dedicating the time to conduct such tests.

I'm curious as to why the data only goes to 270mA if you tested to 310nm. As for the lines, I'd list them both on the data. Which line changes more, then 473nm or the 480nm?

Did you datalog the 50mW@300mA run? how long did the higher power last?

Some beamshots of the combined lines would be cool!
