Fishing line cutting? Any fishermen here?

Hi all
I'm new to lasers and avid charter fisherman. There are few REALLY good cutters for braided line and they almost always leave frayed line when they do cut. I would imagine that a laser can burn through the line and the melting action would eliminate the fray. What do I need to QUICKLY cut through line and affords convenient "holdability"? Finally, I would imagine that anything that can cut through braid can cut through monofilament, right? Oh and also, it should not be "momentary on" as I don't need the additional task of holding a button down AND holding the line. I can foresee holding it in my teeth while I hold the line in two hands.

The best thing is to tape the bit you want to cut, place the line on a wooden board, heat a knife on the stove until the blade glows and then cut through the line.

You could use a laser but whether you could cut through the line would depend on a few factors..such as the colour of the line and wavelength of laser used (you want the light to be absorbed by the material not reflected), the lines thickness, the power of the laser and its duty cycle. If you have nylon line or something similar it could work. You must use goggles when doing this and be very careful that no one else can be exposed! Any reflections from a glassy melted plastic surface or other nearby reflective objects could be extremely dangerous. One other thing to consider is if your boat is moving around, it will be difficult to aim and keep the laser on the bit you are trying to cut.

To be honest a hot knife has served me well in the past, it would be a lot faster and safer, so I would definitely recommend that instead. :) Best of luck :beer:

Yeah...I thought so. I've been using nail clippers and small scissors but it's hard to find anything that cuts well without taking time. When I have to handle 6 newbies tangling line and re rigging them heating a knife just doesn't seem to cut it (pun intended). I think they make battery operated instant heat wires for this. I just have to find them.

Yeah I wouldn't recommend using a high power laser on a rocking boat with a 6 pack of people aboard. Thats just asking for trouble, or a lawsuit if you catch someone in the eye.
 
What about a diamond blade knife?

Cool tool! Thanks for sharing this. I always hated trying to cut my braided line with a razor.
 
Wouldn't a pocket butane torch work well enough?
Those things are hot enough to melt pennies.
I used to have a really good one that was windproof and water resistant.
Butane refills are cheap, too.
 
A lot of my fishing friends use Rapala Super Line Scissors and power pro line and after all these years I'm still in love with my Berkley Big Game:yh:
