First Quater Moon Photo

Spent a few hours with the camera playing about with manual settings to get the perfect moon picture. This was zoomed 30x and the best quality it seams I can get, although I am still waiting for a full moon for the best possible shot I can get.

I am using a Canon PowerShot SX110 IS which has 10x Optical Zoom and 40x Digital Zoom. I have the picture resolution down to 1600x1200 which means I can zoom in 30x (10x Optical & 20x Digital) without loosing any picture quality at all.

I then just adjust the manual aperature and exposure etc. settings until I get the best shot.

I will admit this is the best shot I got out of about 100.

Oh, I thought you were using a DSLR...30X is a lot for an SLR lens :D

Haha well the way I would describe this camera is getting hold of a DSLR and a compact camera and squashing the two together haha! It has 20 different modes and full manual settings.

is it so little or is it just me? i must admint the photo is well done, but I can't see any special thing on it (sure because I've never tried to make it xd)

I supose it's a difficult thing to do so well, good job! :D

The special part is the fact its zoomed far enough and adjusted finely enough to see the craters on the moon. Note there are no over exposed or under exposed areas on the picture.

You have some pretty good work on there.
 
That photo got my astronomy side all hot and bothered for another astro photoshoot. Time to pull out the 80mm apochromatic refractor and CCD and get a few new moon shots.

Well scratch that... Tonight the sky will be overcast in my area and even if it wasn't the seeing and transparency will be crap :(
 
I have been trying to get a real close shot for a while now, but the moon moves to fast to get a clear crisp shot. Any hints/suggestions? I always try when the moon first rises, and at its largest.

Tech,

If you are looking to get astrophotography shots, you will need a telescope on an equatorial mount to track the stars so you can use the long exposures required for these faint objects. You can use a computerized altazimuth mount to shoot brighter deep-sky objects, but you really need something like a German-equatorial mounting with motor drives on both axes to do any kind of serious long-exposure deep-sky astrophotography. Even for close-up moonshots you'll need at least a German-equatorial mounting with a motor drive on your declination axis to get perfect pictures and eliminate the motion.
