First ever childproof Burning Laser? ~100mW

Here is my first DIY red (650nm) laser ever.
my other DIYs are here (All terrain torch) and here (micro laser)

It has a somewhat visible beam at night (but cannot be used for stargazing as the beam isn't visible enough).

Runs off 4XAA batteries (one circuit with reed relay) and 2X 9V Batteries (in parallel for the laser).

It will burn (almost instantly) an unmarked match and through text on paper.

Its main feature however is it's 'child proof' and safety technology! I think it is one of the first lasers of its kind to incorporate safety as well as power!

It has a key start, missile launch switch (also emergency stop switch (see video)), & light up push switch (all of which have to be on before laser will work)

It also has 3 indicator lights to show when the laser is powered up.

Videos -they are .3gp format should work with WMP as well as Quicktime (sorry about format as I said I only have my phone at the moment)

NB if you think all the switches are a waste of time please look at the vid- it makes clear why the are there.

NB2 the laser will only work when all 3 lights are ON.

yea wow, first when i saw the pics i thought all of those lights and fancy switchs were very unnecessary.
but the video made it look really nice!

where did u buy the key start?

cheers, I was really worried people would laugh...

I think this is really quite necessary as I have some very young siblings who I don't want to get blinded by my laser lying around the house.

And parents too lol ;D generally if they see something with a missile launch switch and key start they leave it alone


Key start switch is from Maplin (UK). I think it was around £1.50 (not incl del.)

key switches are great, i would've gotten a few at the local computer show but the guy wanted $6 each

Yeah key switches are quite expensive... but I think it adds something...

nothing says dont touch me than a big key switch

If anyone is interested in "key-switches" I have bought some from these guys, they seam to work well:

They also have some really small 10uf Tant Caps, among other odd "must-haves"

It think all the safeties are overkill really, and apparently using up a lot of power as well - the laser itself could be powered from the 4 AA's without a hitch.

As a safety any decent keyswitch would suffice as long as you dont let the key lay around. They can obviously be bypassed easily by anyone with some technical skill, but so can any other protection mechanism.

Have to say it looks really cool, and your work on it is very clean (well on the outside anyway, didn't see the inside).Lol , with all that stuff it looks way more dangerous than it really is,I would be afraid to turn it on .But I have to say, just the key switch would suffice, I bet children know how to push a button a and flip a switch And if you want it to be hard to bypass you could put it all in a heavy metal box with a lock and a key switch ;D

It is over kill but I worn with the principle-
If its worth doing its worth overdoing!

Its also not using up much power at all, its 2 leds, I have so many batteries because I dont want to replace them regularly
