ok, i've found this on DX:

i was wondering if i could get some help with electronics, i really want to build one for myself (i know where to buy components in argentina, i know how to do PCBs, i just need help WITH the PCB, i dont know the circuit nor the components i have to use).

does anybody know how to do it?

I googled how many volts there is in the phone-line and it's tricky. 40 to 90 volts! :o


Can't you just take an old phone-charger/adapter instead to power your LED's? It would be the best option IMO. :-/

do you mean, gutting a wired phone and getting the STUFF that powers it?


i measured the voltage of my phone's line yesterday and it read 46,3v (+-1v). but maybe when it gets a signal it jumps to 90v, but IDK.

What I meant was a cellphone-charger, about 5v and hook up some resistors (the value depends on the LED's and charger). But your idea might also work, if you find some lower voltage on the board I guess.

You will only use this as a light or what? :-?


BTW, what is this, free energy?!

lol, it is free electricity supply (you dont pay it from the telephone company)

i need it to work with the phone's jack because the infrastructure on my zone is HORRIBLE and we get blackouts every week, im tired of buying candles..

Ok, find an old phone like this one (or something else IDK):

Take out the board, post some pics of it and try to find a lower voltage. Somewhere around 5-15 volts should be fine.
Oh, don't take my word for anything, I'm only saying what I would do.

That's really interesting, never thought of that.

What I'd really like to see is someone with the right transformers and circuits to actually make a powerpoint equivalent from their phoneline :)

Now THAT would be awesome :)
 
Just be aware that when the phone rings, the voltage is around 100V pulsed at 20Hz.
Could fry some of your components if you design for 5-10V only.
 
I was thinking about that too, but if there's some IC's on the board, I suspect that they are power with maybe 5v at all time. Should be easy to check.

One other problem would be if this thing makes a big-@$$ phone-bill or something. But I guess that all you'll need to do is to cut off the other wires that goes into the socket to be safe.

yeah i've heard that when the phone rings it goes to around 120v. so i dont really know how to design it to detect that and be able to perform on both voltages..
 
IC = Integrated Circuits. Google for some pics so you can recognize them. ;)

Hum, maybe KipKay is God? :-X I can't believe I missed that one.

BUT, the circuit seems to be designed for that particular light and isn't the lm317-regulator limited to 37v max?

I wouldn't worry about the phone company - LED's don't need much power to work, not more than a phone ::). And if the phone guys find out anyway (geez how?), just make a lame excuse LOL!
 
Lol, yeah.
I would highly doubt that an LED Lamp would be detectable, (As most phones have LEDs in them!) but it's use during a blackout would not be too useful as you could have a flashlight with much higher brightness, and a little more portability.
I don't know about KipKay's circuitry, we already know how he makes us burn out laser diodes..
 
I dont CARE about the phone company.

they dont regulate anything, they just want you to pay the billZ :)
