Driver current: suggestions?

Is it a bad idea to drive an unknown diode at 1.8A? If I end up with a "less efficient" diode, will it overheat/self destruct with that input? Should I aim slightly more conservatively? Obviously, I want power (don't we all), but it's not my number one concern.

From what I hear an M140 handles 1.8A at the very maximum, but I'd double check. Maybe go for closer to 1.6A for longevity

Also shoot Jayrob, Moh, Ehgemus, or the like about custom heatsinks, they are fantastic machinists.
