DL Aurora Host: How Much Is Too Much 589

I have recently contacted Dragonlasers about getting a 589nm Aurora Laser with an output power of 10mW. They said they could make it for me(for a price of course), but I am left wondering: will it be detrimental to pump 10mW of 589nm Laser light out of such a small host?

My concerns:
1. Too Little Heatsinking Capabilities
2. Unstable Output due to Temperature Fluctuations
3. Reduced Lifetime

I would love to have that much yellow coming out of an Aurora sized host, however unless it just turns out to be a very efficient unit, I see so many problems due to temperature. While a simple diode laser can handle a wide range of temperatures, the complex process of generating 589nm is not so forgiving.

What are your thoughts on this, LPF guru's? Should I just forsake the aesthetically pleasing Aurora host for their ugly, but more efficient Spartan series Lasers?

Let me know,
Isaac

Well im too familiar with this but trying to add too much power to a host which is small can't be good. There has to be a point in which heat won't radiate properly causing the laser to not work properly/if at all.

Im sure none of this is correct but I would think buying an uglier host for more power is worth it :)

what so ugly about a Spartan? I have one and they look just fine. I also have a DL viper pointer

I know DL is on the "the list" not sure how long they have been there. spartans are actually pretty small, only a little longer than a 501B

the FDA list

I know I saw it somewhere, cant find the link

my Spartan with my 501b for size comparison

oh and that list you wanted

Most of the 589s I see are all 500mW-3.3W c-mounts. 5-10mW can generally be had from a 500mW if the crystals and conditions are good. Get me a 5mW and I can likely bump it up a couple mW....

As for customs....

Do you think you would be able to see a 5mW 589nm beam in the night sky for star pointing? I may try to go for a 30mW Spartan.

You can, but only in a really dark area. It's pretty dim. Yellow is fairly bright, but still not like green. Kinda on par with 473/488 to my eyes. Certainly can see it, but it doesn't light up the sky like 532 does.

So then 30mW sounds like the best bet. How easy do you think it would be to implant a Spartan module into a custom host? I have done 473nm on my own, and then had you and Ehgemus tag team a 532nm. Dunno about 589 though.

Not sure, I've never disassembled a 589 spartan. Only a PGL-A and C, as well as the GLP-589. They all use their own module style. Though the green spartan has a similar one to my green PGL-C.

I have been in contact with Adam from Dragonlasers and he said that they will guarantee delivery but that it will take 10-20 days. Fine by me. Once my 532 sells I will be purchasing it. I love my 800mW 532nm Ehgemus Laser but it is just too much green and I would rather have a yellow.

Someday soon I will be able to add a 30mW 589nm Spartan to my signature.
