You would probably find a low power red diode and an IR diode.
Nothing capable of burning anything.

If the diode is in a standard can and nor some combination unit, then it could be good as a tester laser for drivers or a low cost first build.

It's better to destroy a free low power laser from a dvd rom then a $20 high powered LD ;)

That's what I thought, and it cant hurt to make a small low powered red pointer.

Ok, salvaged the diode and its a closed can.

I added a little power like I do with all my other diodes just to check they work and I am only getting a very dim red light, only enough to make a dim red light on my finger in a dark room 1cm away.

Is it really worth buying aixiz optics and a driver for it?

Being only a ROM it would be very low power, although by not using a driver you might of damaged it by supplying too much current. Something like that might of only been 1-5mW and anything over 10mA could of fried it, unlike the burner diodes which could take 50mA of test current before you need to start regulating it more closely.

You could try plugging it into a driver and increasing the current, that might make it brighter?

Im about to order a flexdrive for my other diy red so I will test it when it arives.

Im not expecting it to be powerful as I said above, I am just thinking of making a little keyring pointer of my own at around 10mW.
