Here's a link to a recent news brief:

Blu-ray.com - Sharp Readies BD-100 Blu-ray Laser
Sharp was able to advance Blu-ray laser diode technology by using a new method to process the edge face of the resonator. Typically, the crystal in the semiconductor is protected by a dielectric film. The consumer electronics company found that by introducing an aluminum oxynitride divider, performance of the diode increased exponentially.

Apparently this new 'facet passivation' technique will allow longer lifetime, greater power(s), and better tolerance to high temps. All good things for laser pointers. Appears those monster 1/2 watt bluray diodes may be close to production now.

"They have performed many test on the diode, operating it more than 1000 hours straight at a temperature of 80 degrees Celsius (176 degrees Fahrenheit) at full power, and have determined it ready for mass production. "

Wow, and 500mw max... is very impressive coming from the manufacturer's rating. I wonder if they will remain in the 5.6mm can...

Nice article! Thanks for sharing!

Now, we just need some units for torture them to death and discover how much they can be overpowered and how much they last in these conditions ..... this can make IgorT more happy ..... J/K :na:

Now why didnt I think of that:thinking:

nice nice...the faster they go, the faster i get my hands on a 6x...

those are goin to be really nice...im trying to picture beam shots^^

Happy Days Are Here AgainThe Sky Is filled With violet Laser Beams Comming From Every Directon Happy Days Are Here Again !!! :D

As long as there is a demand for 6X I dont think the price will change much. I think if we all took a break for a month or so, you'd see them drop some.

Wow sweet! I'd bet my behind the price tag will be heavy though...

WOWZERS! get two of these, some PS-3 sled optics, and a simple dye resonator and you could easily buuild a tunable dye laser :o)
