Anyone traveled to Thailand for vacation?

Me and 2 other friends from the USA are looking for about 12 days on a nice beach somewhere for ~$1200-$1300 each including round trip airfare. the only place I can find is Phuket Thailand. I was wondering if it is safe there.

You guys know any other places where the dollar is strong that has nice beaches?

I visited there 6 times years ago and loved it

Yea thats where we want to go but im looking for cheap hotels on the beach.
