3D printers

I am quite interested in 3D printers and I was wondering how many people here have them. I know recently 3D printers have really dropped in price because there are many kickstarters on them and such. If you have one did you buy a full kit or build it? Also what is a rough price estimate of what one costs?

I would really like to get one but it needs to be pretty high quality (I'm not talking $$$$ quality)

There are so many new 3D printers on the market and I just don't know which ones would be worth buying.

So if you have one

1. Did you buy a kit or build a reprap
2. What's the quality of prints
3. What type of things have you printed

I bought a kit ....the quality is good but takes time ....mechanical components gears,cogs,engine parts pistons, conrods ....

Overall do you think it was worth it? If you could go back would you buy it again?

Yes they work very well but not fast but detail is excellent i didn't pay for it my company did so i don't know the cost but it gets used for prototypes often .

no.i just use it the name is sort of covered over ....i be in to work next two days i get details ..I'm impressed makes 3D objects you could never machine on a lathe or mill in months ...

I have full access to a Cnc engraver/router at school. It cost then 13K but for them it was most definitely worth it just because of the amount if use it gets. I however wouldn't pay that much for a Cnc machine...

3d printer prints plastic. CNC machine subtracts, but does so with more materials than just plastic.

Afinia has the H-Series that seems to have a nice resolution to the prints. 5" x 5" x 5" print volume. About $1,400. Cube didn't impress me when I saw their printer about a year ago but they have a new model which is bigger and supposedly better quality now. There's always Makerbot, but I never liked the quality of their prints.

Actually I'm looking into building a reprap. I like the idea of building something that is actually useful. I want to take pride into something I build. I figure it will only cost about $500-800 if I build a reprap rather than buying a full printer. My second choice is a solidoodle 3 which is an excellent choice but I kinda like the idea of building one.

I will keep this thread updated. Another thing is I would need at least a 8x8 print area. So there is no way 5" or 6" would work for me ahah

I have a 3D printer, built it from a kit, works for my needs. Warping is a pain in the ass though, half the prints warp and are unusable. PLA is a pain in the ass to use.

Get a good nozzle. Don't get a jhead, they suck. Grab a magma or similar all-metal hot end and never look back.

Expect to spend lots of time fiddling with it, they require lots of love and care to print properly. You can get 2k and get a pretty reliable printer, but don't expect reliability from anything you build.
