Distant early warning... 445nm to be banned soon?

The people who produce and handle 473nm and 405nm, even high power 532nm must be embarrassed for the price destruction due to appearance of 445nm.........
This "445nm fever" will need some "time" to adjust the confused market...I think.

Huge faceplam.

ALL the lasers we build are illegal. Yet we all have them

Not true, at least in the USA. Government law does not cover lasers built by hobbyists. You can check for yourself the CDRH or FDA site. One will have the info.

PL Admin will soon come out and say they had to do what they did. I know that the Admin of a self moderated forum would not make such actions so fast (and without council of the forum) if there were "nothing going on". Something happened over there. Is it something that can happen here? Who knows?

Thanks for posting that pertinent information Steve! Forums like this one and PL are definitely susceptible to such a lawsuit. Not saying it's justified or righteous, just saying there are lawyers itchin' to get a shot at it for their own career motivations and with no regard for the laser industry or hobby in mind. Exactly the same people who pushed for it to be a law that everyone under 18 must always wear a helmet when riding a bicycle anywhere. No science behind it, but it's now the law.

Its not the FEDS you need to fear. Its a twist on this:

Strategic lawsuit against public participation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

-----------------One other thing to think about-----------------------

Who gets the SIGNIFICANT profit on a pointer. Overseas labor is less then a dollar or two a day, and the materials cost is Zilch.
What is your hard earned money really paying for?

Steve

I don't think there's a way in hell that they can use SLAPP tactics to put this cat back in the bag. For every person they might try to sue, another 6 will pick up where that person left off. I would imagine they will have to pick their targets, and the average hobbyist isn't going to be one of them because of the expense of taking legal action. They need to worry the most about Wicked Lasers and other major sellers. I think they can start the battle against the hobbyist and forums if they want, but it's un-winnable.

I do believe that it's in everyone's best interest (esp. now) that the 445nm section here be only visible to members.

But the point is they don't ever expect to "win". All it takes is a properly worded letter to the owner of a forum and that forum is gone. How much would this forum be willing to pay in legal fees to find out if such a letter represented a credible threat?

What do they get by censoring this forum? I would take this information elsewhere myself simply out of spite alone.. Then they can threaten me at my new forum.. then someone else will take the data and post it elsewhere.. etc etc etc.. it's all been done before.. look at the drug war.

IF the small group of professionals that knew anything about lasers when they were first coming into their own had wanted for there to be NO laser hobby, they should have kept things secret long ago... like 30 years or more ago. This 445nm thing is a natural progression of this hobby since it is rooted in technology. Technology gets cheaper, better, small, faster, etc. ALL technology follows this pattern. Hobbyist lasers of all kinds are bound to become cheaper, better, more powerful, smaller, and on and on. That's how it works. All the crying in the world by all the worrywarts there are in existence WILL NOT CHANGE IT.

The line seems to be drawn at mass manufacturing, medical, resale, trade, or public display.

Your still missing it. Its not censoring or information or LPFs profit.

These actions can prove "due diligence" if they ever get to court and have to prove that they not only didn't allow the product to be used in the harmful way, but that they worked diligently to prevent it from being used that way.

Despite all of their hard work to stop people from abusing their product, someone else worked to get around their safeguards and work. Thus, they are not responsible for little Billy's blindness. It is the responsibility of that "someone else."

Peace,

So it's about ass-protecting.. I see. We'll see where this takes us.. Unless someone kills me, I'll be doing what I can to ensure that laser display technology can be used by hobbyists in some way or another. I know I'm not alone.

This forum is also protected by Section 230 of Title 47 of the US Code. In other words, the forum is not responsible, or liable, for content published on it via other parties (i.e. forum members).

No argument there.

It is the legal cost of defending that position that is the problem.

Remember, their lawyers are on retainer (or fully employed by them).

The forum owner would have to take the money out of his pocket to tell the judge to consider Section 230 and dismiss the suit.

In court, knowledgeable silence, is consent.

Yup that's called "suing into submission" , and it is intended to "win" by bankrupting your opponent. It is the favorite method by giga-buck corporations to eat up competition.

I bought two diodes. I am going to take really good care of these, just like they are my two nads.

this is a reality now. Protect that blue. waiting for the smoke to clear, to see what really happened.

got the blues, waiting on my blues.
