In other news, I just had an Xperia U in my hands to try out for a minute, and I have to say, even with original OS 2.3, it appears to be brutally fast, smooth UI animations, and most of all I really enjoy the screen colors and sharpness (that's something Youtube videos will never show you),

Also it's very light, it's EXACTLY the size I expected it to be (can put in pocket but large enough)...

Man now I can't WAIT until I save up munies.

it seems brutally fast....well you do have a 6 year old phone ;)

and i think he is saying jelly bean utilizes the quad core processors that some phones have while previous versions did not. just my guess :confused:

Besides, there was a video, differences between 4.0.4 and 4.1 are trivial at best.

Eudaimonium,

think of this as if you are buying a laptop which is a few years old but still has enough hardware to run an OS with higher requirements. Why use older OS it came with if you can newer OS (you have all the required drivers) on it and have latest security patches, performance enhancements and greatly improved usability.
 
Yes that. just the stock android it came with. i flashed the new firmware recently but lost root. waiting for jellybean.
 
Hmm, why does one need root access? What does that give you? From what I've seen, to say that the Android OS is flexible is an understatement, considering it's completely open-source.

If it's a good idea to gain root access perhaps I will learn how to do it. How difficult is it? What does it involve?
 
Just like linux, you have to have root/super user access to make permanent changes.

If you want to make any developer changes to the stock ROM. You will need root access. Otherwise you will only have permissions to install apps and make changes within the stock ROM.

That iPhone I sent you is jailbroken (which is similar to root access). Without that jailbreak. You could not mod your phone the way you already have.
 
Just like in a PC since I take it you have never used Linux, you have to have Admin Access to change the OS... (Windows)
 
I "used" it in a way that I played around with it a little. For my own personal needs it didn't meet Windows' usefuless so I reverted back.

So why would I want to change core system? I know what "rooting" does and I wanted to know the ultimate goal of doing it, not what it does.
 
Allows you to upgrade the kernal and the libraries for it. Like doing a windows upgrade. You would not be able to upgrade your computer if it had a password and you didnt know it... The phone has a password, set by your carrier... You cant find out this password, but you can force the phone to let you in and trick it into allowing a full upgrade or change...

In any event, I'll see later but I looks like I might not need that. I am still to bring myself up to sleep with app development but root access appears to be unneccesary to me.

Unless I'd need to to access some features of the device or something. That'd suck.

because its not. just because it is an android phone does not mean there is a build of the new os for it. If there was you wouldnt have to flash ROMs.....

so people port builds of it to work on similar phones etc. another bit of advice get a phone with a large following on XDA-developers

the xperia u has 87 threads in android development

galaxy nexus has 300+

my old phone the evo 4g has over a thousand.. i miss that phone. i would flash multiple roms weekend, tons of fun. what a quality cell phone that was :cryyy:
 
Nah, I'm pretty much stuck on Xperia one and I'd really wanna get that :D Thanks for the advice though.
 
Just want you to know, that device will be something in the next year or two, but as of now its a gimmick. It does not have the latest and greatest. It is based on last years designs...
