What Happened to Lifetime17?

His prices were very nice and affordable.
Many buyers didn't realize just how much time and work he put into making full hosts or anything custom or making flashlights into lasers or his Plug and Play hosts.
Plus the cost out of his pocket for his tooling.

He got fed up and upset with members trying to low ball him on his already cheap prices and the contant messages of members changing their desired host or heatsink and asking if he could lower his price.. The greed of some people was enough for him.

He is missed and was such a big asset to the LPF. On top of that he was and is a great guy..

Don’t blame him for that. Remember the triangle. Cost, Quality and Time. You pay for the quality and workmanship Rich produces. By all means liaise to meet a budget, but don’t undercut someone trying to make a honest living.

Your right and I like the triangle reference.. Lifetime17 'aka Rich" didn't make much of a profit and probably just broke even if even that on alot of his builds.
He got a hobby lathe just to make nice focus knobs at first and then it grew to making custom hesatsinks and hosts when he bought more machinery.
Anybody else make the connection that when Lifetime17 left this forum it started to die.

We have Smackitup "Z80" and Ricker "Mainely lasers" at least which helps. I hope they dont take offence but it would be nice if they got little hobby lathes.:giggle:

I have one! Just juggling a full time job, and family, more diy hosts on the way!

I have a shitty Harbor Freight hobby lathe but I don't use that anymore. I prefer my 12x36 Precision Matthews gunsmithing lathe. I also have a CNC lathe that I have no idea how to use.
I wish I could say just do it but I know Family and work comes first. At least you guys have some DIY big heat sink hosts.

Lifetime came close to buying the Harbor Freight lathe but he didn't like the plastic gears but I can't remember what he went with but it was around the size as Harbors and had steel gears.

Oh you guys are so so close:cry:

Now I need to Google your Mathews gunsmithing lathe.:)

Edit: Wow Z80 those are some expensive and nice lathes!! Not sure which one you have..
Do both you guys have tooling or at least enough to start machining??

So the problem remains the same as it was when Lifetime17 bailed out even with lathes and equipment readily available. Not enough/very few laser pointer people are interested in spending the money necessary to make an effort to offer a wide range of hosts with or without drivers installed to make doing so worthwhile.

Anyone who wants anything special/custom made can contact Z80/Barnett or Ricker/Mainly lasers and ask about the possibilities for them making what they want and if possible to then get an approximate $ quote to do the setup and work to make the host they envision.
