Remember, these are more flashlights than lasers - the divergence is terrible!

emitter area 100x1μm. The 445nm diodes are 15x1μm (I think) for comparison.

Larger emitter area = worse beam.

A 1W 808nm diode will have an equal emitter size, so a 635nm diode won't be much worse. Only the difference in wavelength will make that the 635nm will have more modes in the same space.
