Quick question regarding Dorcy Jr.

Hello there fellow laser enthusiasts !

I have a quick question regarding the dorcy jr. which will be my 1st DIY build , I have read in most tutorials that you have to gut out the host completely , But Does this include the circuit board as well ? . Reason i ask is because i have seen a few tutorial vids online but in none i see the person take out the circuit board :undecided: so i was just wondering before i make a mistake ! Take out the circuit board. You will be using a driver. Your spring should give you "direct" contact between the driver and the battery.

Thanks for the response daguin ,

I guess i might just have to find another spring because oddly my host's spring is slim unlike others that i have seen extracted from dorcy jr's . Like real slim . I ordered my host from amazon which was a mistake because they kill with their shipping , and i also had to struggle removing the guts from the head unlike other posts that i've read mention they slide out "easily" :thinking: . Hopefully all goes well though with the build and i have no problems at all . Thanks again for your time .

Pull the head apart. The wide part of the spring may be inside the "pill." Even if it is slim, it can work. I use the black plastic "cover" over the circuit board as a spring guide anyway.

You didn't have to gut the circuit board necessarily if you were making a red. The old method to making a red using a Dorcy was to just solder a 5ohm resistor in series with the red diode, thus not needing to buy another circuit driver, and thus not having to mess with the spring and all that. You can also solder a capacitor in parallel I believe in order to prevent voltage spikes. I've done this before, and I know several others have as well. It should hold up fine - mine has so far and I plan on doing this again, and you can ask Kenom about it since I believe he was the first to do it.

Ohh, but if you do do this, make sure you only use 3V primary batteries, or special 3V rechargeables (not 3.7V as normal - in which case you may need a different charger). The reason being 3.7V will burn out your diode.

Absolutely. I strayed away from the stock driver in the dorcy because it's not a very clean driver. too many spikes for my taste. The flex drive is a much better way of building this laser as it's much more stable and efficient. Plust the heatsinks are so much better than what I was making in my tutorial.

That being said, gut the old driver and buy an external.
