Problem with inserting diode to heatsink

Hi,
I have just recieved today a heatsink that was missing from a host I purchased somewhile ago. I don't understand how I have to use it. Do I have to push the diode into the hole so it won't fall down when I turn the heatsink down?
I tried hard to push it and then I tried to use pliers to push inside a 5mW diode and I failed.
This is this heatsink:

What can I do?
Do I really have to push it inside?
Thanks,
Yuval

You need one of these, http://laserpointerforums.com/f39/diode-press-sets-80158.html not sure which size since I don't know what diode you are pressing. Most likely its a 5.6mm diode.

if the heat sink is the one pictured above, it looks like its a direct press heat sink. if that is the case then that diode press wont work since its designed for a 12 x 30mm module.

i have never seen that heat sink before so i am not sure and it also looks like a stock picture from the seller so if the OP can provide a link to the host and heat sink then we can better answer your question. either way it looks like the diode needs to be pressed either into the heat sink or a module then set in the heat sink

I use those presses for my direct press builds, you just cant use the sleeve to align it, gotta do it by being careful

Works just fine on my Eghemus host, that is not even close to 12mm. I don't see any reason you couldn't use those diode presses for any build, unless the diode pocket is recessed in the heat-sink deeper than the press itself can go.

I succeeded plant it with pliers and the diode works (I practiced on it with some 5mW diodes I have, now I planted the 100mW one)
But I made it only partly planted - about 0.5mm of the diode is still not planted.
Is it ok?

You want to get the diode pressed in so far it is slightly recessed, if it is still protruding out of the back, its not in far enough.

Here is some great info about pressing diodes. http://laserpointerforums.com/f51/tutorial-pressing-diode-77187.html
