Hey guys, I'm really interested in learning about optics and laser physics and I want to know some good textbooks and online guides into the subjects.

At some point I want to build a laser, but I need to learn the maths/physics behind it.
I understand safety is paramount too.

Any help is good.

-Thanks

Welcome to LPF.

Good you want to study before getting laser. Do not forget to spend a lot of time on safety as well. Try to do research here on LPF, you will find google search bar at the bottom of the forum. Just put some keywords there. And if you do not find the answer to your question after searching forums, try it outside LPF as well. Still no luck? Do not hesitate to ask and you might add what you have found on the internet as related topic to enhance the discussion. It is always good if one does some research before asking and put some findings to initiate more interest and often nice discussion here.

Enjoy and stay safe.

I was pleasantly surprised by the helpfulness of the members on this forum. Haha, the stickies I've been reading are useful. Thank you for your response. :thanks:

Read up on safety google which are essential to have in the Safety and Legal subforum here as Radim mentioned: Safety & Legal Issues - Laser Pointer Forums - Discuss Laser Pointers

Information on all aspects of laser safety and laws, rules, and regulations by Country can be found at this excellent site--would be a very wise thing to study this site: Laser Pointer Safety - A comprehensive resource, for safe and responsible laser use

Laser Pointer Safety is a very good source of safety information. Highly recommended. :)

I was worried about the UK customs restrictions on laser parts and stuff, so that legal information will be very handy.

Welcome to LPF Kermit!
It sounds like you've received some good advice. :)
Have fun, be safe, and enjoy your stay here!

Edit: Here's a good place to use if you're in the UK, "Odic Force".

If you are looking for texts on the subject, some of mine are "Introduction To Modern Optics" by Grant R. Fowles, "Theoretical Physics" by Georg Joos, "Physics" by Raymond A. Serway, and if you are interested in holography I can recommend some good texts on that subject as well. These are pretty advanced and the math involved is too. There is much to be learned here and at Sam's laser FAQs online. In fact, the Sam's FAQs is probably your best option. :D

Ah, thank you very much. They are exactly what I'm looking for text-wise. :)

What's holography? Holograms and stuff? I'd like to know more about that, yeah.

Well, instead of explaining it here I'll link you to Frank DeFreitas.

Christian Holography: World of Tomorrow

Do not be potentially affraid from Christian focus, in this case it makes sense with science. ;) A lot about holography might be found there. My favourite site, where I learned a lot.

If you are interested there is even a hudred bucks (or so) kit for sandbox holography - look for LitiHolo kit on google.

There are even many books - Practical Holography from Graham Saxby is considered great source for example.
;)

Here is a nice hologram:

It actually was the main reason I entered laser hobby, but than I started with laserpainting art and here we go. :D But holography is my dream in future...

Rep+ as it is IMO one of the best way how to get deep into lasers. You will learn a lot from studying holography.

Kermit, Here is the link for Sam's Laser FAQs:

www.repairfaq.org/sam/lasertoc.htm

Some interesting texts on holograms and how to make them are "The Complete Book Of Holograms" by Joseph E. Kasper and Steven A. Feller, "Holography Handbook" by Fred Unterseher, Jeannene Hansen and Bob Schlesinger and "Homemade Holograms" by John Lovine. Hope this helps to get you on your way.
