A street light bulb the size of a Tic-Tac?

Wonder what the tech might do for lasers?

Besides faster and cheaper DVD/Blu-Ray drives and writers, not much for the Average Joe.

This is Laserpointerforums.......average joes, we ain't.

An 'AJ' wouldn't begin to know what to do with a plasma pump diode. Dr. Lava would have his name etched on the moon's surface in less than a week.

I don't think you're gonna get plasma to emit coherent radiation instead of regular messy light too easily ::)

LOL.  Look up 'Laser Pump'.   Of course the plasma output isn't coherent......

It may, however, prove quite suitable for pumping a lasing medium.

Maybe a YAG doped for CW? :-/ (I have no idea what requirements the light pumping a YAG has)
The problem is , I'm sure, it still need loads of power and produces loads of heat.

It puts out 140 lumens per watt. It simply can't afford to waste much energy as heat. Way better than current LED tech.

Plasma can emit coherent light, that is how an argon lasers (have a cavity) and x-ray lasers (no cavity) work.

Sure, but we're talking apples and oranges. The ouput of this particular technology is quite similar to sun light and at much greater efficiency, producing much less heat.

The implications seem very fruitful.

Fruitful, is that why you used the apples to oranges example?

:-[

You caught me. I went out on a limb with that one.

Because that's where the fruit is.

Don't tell Doyle Brunson I mutilated his line.
