Only just getting started with this idea, but I am finding lasers pretty useful as a light source in photographic situations that call for dark environments.

I think this has a lot of potential.

Re: Lasers make good light sources for photography

I use my 30mW laser for a light If I need to walk around the house at night, I just point it at the ceiling, yet another use for lasers.

Yea, I use my x-85 for that too. It works very well.

A very nice idea about lasers and photography EventHorizon, the first pic looks really nice!  :) I might try this for photos at night.

I'm one of those weird people that use flashlights as a light source. Can you guys help me? D:

Hmm, thats actually a really good idea. I may try this tonight.

The only problem I can think of is depending on how you have your camera set up and the power of the laser, you could easily end up capturing the beam in the shot by mistake.

Good point. I would recommend fast exposure times, and when that's not possible, use as weak a laser as you can.

Re: Lasers make good light sources for photography

I think lasers can make very interesting light sources indeed - the dot is basically a point source you can project onto any surface that reflects the color to some degree.

Another thing is that this allows you to make visible things that normally arent. For example, you can point the laser at one side of a frosted lightbulb, and see a projection of the filament on the other side. This is a good way to tell if a bulb is still okay, but also an interesting photograph situation.

I do this too.

Nice pics :D Its interesting how a laser can highlight textures (wall in the 1st pic) as opposed to a flashlight.

Re: Lasers make good light sources for photography

That's the point source thing going on - it lights up the wall like a bright lightsource mounted flush with the wall surface would.

Poiting it under a spider or fly gives an eerie projection too, though the latter tend to take off rapidly when lased with power ;)
