Hello, just wanted to ask if i dont have googles, and i have a 100mW 532 nm green laser... i need googles, right?

could i use sth different? like... sunglasses?

No you can not use sunglasses or a welding mask or anything similar. You must use goggles specifically designed for blocking lasers.
 
^^ Yes, more than a cheap laser pointer, but how much you are worth your eyes?

If you really think $ 60 is much money to properly protect your eyes, maybe this is not the right hobby for you, no offense.
 
This im sure will never get old..

Being a new member is no excuse, anything over 5mW will damage the eyes, Laser's dont care if you're new or not..

I've spent over $250 on laser glasses so far. I don't know about you but my eyes are a lot more valuable than $250. To answer your question though I recommend either of these glasses from OEM Laser Systems.

AL3 - KTP, Argon, Blu Ray [NR-AL3-EN207] - $77.00

or

ARG - Blu Ray, Argon, Blue, KTP [NR-ARG-EN207] - $80.50

Both will block 405nm blu-ray, 445nm blue, and 532nm green. Note that they WILL NOT block the 1064nm IR from an non-IR Filtered green nor will they block any of the red wavelengths. They're pricey but again how much is not going blind worth it to you? I also suggest you read this thread too.

No they don't which is why I pointed that out. IIRC there's only one or two filters that block both 532 and 1064. Again from what I recall thy had a fairly low VLT and cost $$$. Honestly unless you're doing something stupid I don't see much need for 1064 blocking but then again greens are "meh" to me anyhow.

To be honest I only saw the links... didn't pay enough attention to the rest of what you posted. My bad :o

The DBD's are what I was actually thinking of getting for myself. Decent coverage, but only 23% vlt :(

Like what the others said, sunglasses will be useless. They'll at best have 15% transmission of most visible wavelengths, while what you will need are glasses rated OD4 or higher, which reduces the transmission by 1/10000, or higher.

Sunglasses are like, OD1 or something.
 
I had to go to the doctor to have some scar tissue removed. It was totally benign, but on my neck, so I wanted it gone. I also had health insurance but with a $250 deductable or so.

Anyway, that short "surgical" procedure, which took all of 15 minutes, and which I could walk out of the office without any kind of followup, cost me about $1000. A thousand dollars for some stupid small medical procedure.

Now imagine all those lasers and goggles you could buy from just one incident where a laser blinds you. A laser incident like this. That guy paid $1000 after insurance just to go to the ER.

And that's just the money.

Imagine permanently losing your eyesight, or becoming partially blinded. All because you were a cheap-ass when it came to safety. I'd be smashing that cheap laser to pieces, or maybe just myself, if I screwed up that bad.

How would you feel if you went to get an x-ray and the tech just draped some foil over you, because he was to much of a cheap skate to buy a lead apron.:wtf:

I was told to wear ear plugs in the army, but I never did, low and behold I am going deaf.

Don't skimp on the glasses, going deaf is peaceful, going blind is not. It wont hurt, you may not notice it at all, at first. By time you notice you have been messing your eye up, its too late. We do not have cybernetic eyes on the market yet(:cryyy:) So use it outside do not hit anything reflective or anyone, the sky is a preferred target, DO NOT aim at aircraft, DO NOT use it indoor until you get the glasses, DO NOT burn anything with it without glasses, DO NOT stare at the spot up close without glasses.

Calling a beginner a noob is not very nice and makes you seem like a proper ahole. Noob is a negative word like when I call you a little ignorant kid. Try to help with information instead.

As an alternative you can have a look at this selection: Laser goggles : Zen Cart!, The Art of E-commerce

They are cheaper and not as broadband protecting like the ones linked earlier in this thread. For lower powered lasers you could buy these and of course continue to use your laser with common sense - ie. no need to prove that they work by targetting your eyes or something silly like that.
