Is the red light of a opto-electro mouse from a diode

"Laser Mouses" use extremely weak infared diodes, The red that you can see is just an LED.

On the back of my Logitech MX1000 mouse it says 848nm laser diode. It is an ir laserdiode.

I'm well aware of what he meant. I'm pointing out "diode" is a vague term.

I see no "laser" in the body of the OP. That probably would've been a better choice of word than "diode."

Yes, i thought there was some sarcasm in there ;) and to bionic, yes he could of put laser diode instead of just diode in the title to make it clearer but normally when people say diode on here it refers to a laser diode (correct me if im wrong, i am just guessing).

How about a rectifier diode?

Or maybe it's a signal diode?

Or a light emitting diode?

Or perhaps a photodiode?

Or a schottky diode?

Tunnel diode?

Or how about your plain ol zener diode?

Orrrrr, maybe it's a laser diode?

Take your pick :D

^And many of those will actually be present in a mouse.

Which is why I know what he meant. You can usually get a good idea by the context. Not everyone will be so lucky. It doesn't help when "diode" and "LED" are in the same sentence. It's like asking "is this a fish or is it a tuna?" Some members or some sales sites will say they have a 200MW pointer. I know what they actually mean, but it is incorrect and may confuse some readers - especially the uninitiated. You stand to lose nothing from using specific and agreed-upon designations.

Ok, ok, you win ;) like cyparagon said, you can normally tell because of the context but it may be a bit confusing when you are new. I remember being mind boggled when i first joined and i thought someone was talking about laser diodes when they were actually talking about a rectifier diode.

all mice are optical. mice without a ball mainly use plain red led. its detected by a tiny low res camera that has built in hard/software to detect movement of the image and convert this to directional data. some chips give access to raw data out for debugging and you can adapt these for use as a camera or scanner, or even light seeking guidance system on models. its a matter of time before they get used in small missiles as they 'lock on' to images.
some that do use laser diodes only do so because the interferance speckles make it easier for the camera to lock on to plain surfaces where there is little surface detail to go by.
