Is 128 milliamps not enough to burn stuff?

I finished attaching the SLD1239JL-54 16x laser to my driver and I adjusted it to 128 milliamps. The laser is not burning stuff but is making a nice bright red circle. Is 128 milliamps not enough to burn stuff with? Do I  need to get the 3 or 4 ohm resister instead? Also, what type of heat sink do I use if I do need one.
 





It depends what diode you're using... Each laser diode has a different range of amperages it runs in... A lower powered yet highly efficient laser might be giving over 200mW at that amperage, while higher powered but less efficient lasers might not even lase at 128mA.

Also, when you say "a bright red circle" do you mean it's projecting a large red blob instead of a focused point? What are you using to culminate and focus the beam? You know you need lenses etc, right?

Also, what are you putting these resistors onto? Most driver schematics include a potentiometer (a type of variable resistor) that allows you to adjust the current... You're not just hooking the diode direct to batteries through a resistor are you? While it may work for LEDs, that's not particularly a good idea with laser diodes.

You need at least 200mA to burn with a SLD1239JL-54 diode.
 
As asked above -- What are you using for a heatsink, housing, focusing assembly. That LD won't last long without a heatsink and you won't burn without a lens assembly.

There have been different lots of the 1239 diode come and go. At 128 mA (measured?) you are likely around 50 mW of output. At 200 mA, you can be up around 150 mW depending on heatsinking and lenses.

Are you measuring the current? What is your current source.?

Well Iam using the lense that comes with the axis laser housing module.

Also does anyone have a picture of their circuit with a heatsink? I have no idea how a heatsink is supposed to be attached.
 
The heatsink goes around the top, or more of the aixiz module to dissipate the heat generated by the LD, it has nothing to do with the circuit.

I use square shaped heatsinks in my box-style builds...

well most of the heat syncs I've seen are round :-[ O well I guess there are square heat syncs but they have a round hole in them for the module right? :P
 
A heat SINK (not sync) can be any shape so long as they conduct heat away from the LD.  Where you are at in you're design, an Aixiz style module will work OK.
What is your measured current?? What is your driver? What is your current souce??

Thanks Everyone, just one last thing, were can I buy those round heatsinks for the axis module?
 
Maxkills --- I understand that there are people from other places here but some people in this country can not communicate as well as you ;D You are doing good !!!

Redelman -- If you have pressed the LD into an aixiz style module properly, it is good enough for about a minute on time at full power. That module is a heatsink in it's own right.

my 16x was burning at about 70 ma, but it had to be focused very close, like an inch, with an aixiz lens.

and by burn i mean melt lines in black plastic
