Gosh this makes me sick






Playing off the general publics ignorance is an effective yet deceiving method of sales. It is upsetting yes, but we really can do nothing to help besides educate the poeple that visit the forum and hope the word spreads. As well as the hobby!

LOL very sick. I checked the sellers feedback, and he has sold a few at that price. One buyer even said " Good Price, Fast Shipping". WOW.
 
Well people are easly fooled by those prices because most of them shop at wicked lasers, where a simple 60mW laser costs as much as 58" HD television.


But you must also consider that regulations on Ebay forbid you from selling lasers over 5mW. This laser is probably capable of more, but is advertise for less.


And it's not that much of a scam considering people are buying BR lasers at 2000$ :eek:
 
I don't really see this as a scam, I just see it as a way for a guy to make a couple of bucks. If the buyer pays $120 for a 5mW violet laser and he is happy, then his money was well spent. Sure a little research could save him a couple bucks, but not everybody knows about places like this. We are just so used to the competition here so we are spoiled with great prices.
 
I dont see a problem with the price...

Try buying a 5mW 405nm laser from coherent or CNI or anywhere else.

There exists also other markets than only cheap laserpointers.
875$ for a 105mW 405nm diode for you is to much, but not for someone who need a diode with exact datasheet - where he know where he is buy it from. For example for forensic things or laboratory. Where you need a 20 optics each for 120$ for collimate the beam to what you need, etc...
Still, there exists also people on earth who pay 10.000$ or more for only 1 or 2mW 405nm !

If someone on ebay sells a 5mW 405nm pointer let him do... You see that it´s made in a nice case for example. You don´t know which optics, diodes, driver they use. Eventually they use a higher quality level than the most "LM317 and Aixiz 5$ lens/housing builds where the diode loss >30% power". And don´t forget - If you sell something comercially... You can´t give your worktime for free. The work of produce it, test it, messure it , make a run in , to answer the much questions on email, to pack it out, pack it in, to drive to the postoffice (plus the sprit, the service costs) , etcetc.

Please guys don´t always think on everythinkg you buy that you buy from a hobbyist who give you 10hours good experienced work for 5$.

Lets define scam. A scam is selling an item for a marginally higher price than others are selling the same/similar/better item. Now lets talk phish. A phish is a person who is so stupid that they don't have common sense. This situation includes both.


1. There are many places that sell the same/similar/better product much cheaper.
2. He is preying on stupid people.

Sure its business, but don't dismiss it like he is not scamming people. He is an eBay seller, not a major tech company. I agree if people are stupid enough to pay that they deserver it. But that does not mean its ok to do so.

Hmm nice - ok - how can you say that its simliar?
What is, if they use other (and better) drivers (which hasn´t peaks at each switch on and off which goes to the diodes)... And if he didn´t use 5$ optics or the 40$ 405nm lens, for example they use more professional optics - which cost each 50euro (thats arround 70US$ each optic).
5mW 405nm isn´t worth for you much - but for a guy who didn´t need that power, but need 405nm - and its build in a Diode which isn´t build out anywhere - it comes from a 100pcs. stock from Manufracturer, this is a better choice (you have the datasheet and 100%ly data of it).
I must really say I haven´t much experience about pointers - I come from Lasershows, not from pointers, so I didn´t see a reason to have that much pointers how the most here have, but each guy his own hobby :)
At lasershows (and I didn´t mean private 2000$ RGB lasers where you look 1-2 shows each month) there are really complete other points where you must look at. There are reasons for use better drivers or design own ones - becouse the peaks kills diodes,etc. ... I see that it isn´t really interesting for you, if a pointer life 5hours that is really really long enought.

You are speculating so it's just your opinion, just like my statement was mine. If you want to put out 2 paragraphs forcing your opinion than you are wasting your own time, not mine. You use the word "if" a lot. Well I have one for you. IF my aunt had balls she would be my uncle.

So coherent is a bunch of scammers because their 405nm 10mW "cube" lasers are like 5-10 grand??

There is absolutely NO comparison between a professional laser and a hobby laser. Like phil said, even the optics in professional lasers are worth hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

Also there is beam quality. Diode beam quality SUCKS. Even the blu-ray diodes that everyone here uses have horrible beam specs in comparison to a professional laser. In a pointer, it doesn't matter. And even in laser projectors it doesn't really matter, but for scientific applications which need a perfectly circularized beam with exact specifications, it is a big deal. Beam correction optics are complicated and expensive. When a bad laser could cost millions in research, it is well worth the few thousand dollars to buy a laser that is absoultely perfect.

Everyone here basically assumes that more power = better and worth more money. In the scientific laser community this is usually not the case. Beam quality and stability of the laser is usually much more important than power. As long as it makes enough power for the application which it is being used for, that is all that matters.

AND lets not forget... you guys are complaining about $120 bucks. Try to build that laser, even with just an aixiz module, for that much and make a few bucks.

Aixiz module - $5
Flex drive - $25
Diode - $20
Host - $25
Ebay fees - $5
Paypal Fees - $5
Batteries - $5

So that is $90 dollars right there.

And that is NOT including the assembly time. Many of you think that time means nothing... Well, time is money. No matter how you slice it. If one of you built that it would probably take around an hour if you knew what you were doing. So Lets assume $20 for that hour of work.

We're at $110. Do you guys still think this is a scam?

Keep in mind that this laser is most likely built by a company with better optics than an aixiz module and probably has more time into R&D.

I think the lasers have gotten to your brains. Either that or you are sniffing the gas. Did I miss something or were we talking about a clown named bouncybubblyballoons selling a cheap Chinese laser for $120???? How come I can assume its a cheap Chinese laser? No spec sheet, non focusable, with cheep batteries and case. How can you assume this is a quality laser? You cant, so all your points are void.

You guys are totally reading too much into this and assuming way to much. Your math is off too. $5 for 2 generic batteries??? $25 for a leadlight host??? Flex Drive??? Mohrenberg was pumping units out for $60 with a heat sink.

2. You both are assuming everything because you don't know the specs or any info on this laser besides the basic info bouncy listed.

If you think its an honest deal then buy one and do a review. Then post the facts instead of this over inflated speculative dribble. He still has 3 left. Until then, YES, I still think its a scam.

opinions are like a$$holes and attitudes...some stink worse than others. why sit here and bitch about something that has nothing to do with your daily lives? does this sellers sales affect you on ANY given day? business is business...leave it at that. if you dont want to pay it and someone else does...then SO WHAT? LIFE GOES ON...
