Hello all!

I've been watching the goings on in the forum for a month or two now, reading up on bits and pieces to get my basic knowledge up to scratch!

I first became interested in lasers after seeing that awful kipkay "hack" as he likes to call it, though in the process I managed to crack the glass inside the diode so I ended up with a two-dot pointer :P

I later scrapped that idea, got myself a new diode and a driver and messed around with the outputs on it for a while before dismantling it and keeping the parts, ready to build something much better looking!

I was about to start a 5mw green laser Spiro graph project but that's on hold at the moment whilst I build a 150mw greenie - parts courtesy of Jayrob (thanks!)

So yeah.. that's my brief history of lasers and builds!

Peace

Welcome to the forums! Where is Zelda?

Jokes aside -nice to see yet another person who has researched well here! It's a shame that you had to go through the nightmare of a kipkay fail "hack" but at least it brought you here - the best resource on the web for all laser info.

I'm curious, Seb do we have anyone who's built a blue using an open-pot in a custom housing only?
Just I see a few low mw blue lasers floating around for major £ and I understand they are very expensive to make at the moment but i still wouldn't pay $3-400 for a 5-10mw pointer.

Welcome to the forum. Since you've obviously done some reading and research here, you are doubtlessly aware of laser safety. That 150mW green is at a power level where goggles are needed for any close up laser activity such as burning. This hobby can be addictive ... Enjoy.

Blue lasers uses crystals to lase, and each crystal needs to be aligned perfectly to even get any output, that's why they are so expensive, and why basically no-one tries to DIY them. It's simply too hard to align the crystals and keep them aligned.
This applies to green lasers too, buy the crystals are cheaper, and they are much more efficient.

Thanks Grix, another fellow xbox 360 modder, I see? :)
