DX ''true'' 10mW for a 12 year old?

I bought the 10mW true green laser for my little brother, who is 12.

Im starting to get 2nd thoughts now. Is a true 10mw too strong for a 12 year old? ive heard they often are overpowered by... alot!

What do you guys thing?
 





I can add that i havent gotten the laser yet. Probably wont for another month or so. We all know the shipping time from DX :P
 
Yes somtimes they can be very overpowered only way to tell the power is with a laser-power-meter.

We don't know if it's safe but 5mw is safe so 10mw is double so now it's unsafe and depends how much common sense the 12 year old has.

I say don't give it to him at all or lend it to him and watch him and once he's done tell him to give it back.
 
well i see your 22 and should at first be there to supervise my 11-13-15 all have lasers
but i always remind them to use thier safety glasses in case of a reflection or accidental
beam exposure ,for sure dont let him take it outside unless you are with him
just be safe and have fun

Have you read "my first eye injury"? That was done with a 15mW laser.

I personally wouldn't give a kid anything above 5mW... but I guess it depends how responsible he is. I would recommend showing him that article so that he fully appreciates the consequences of misusing it.

One of them AVG 55mW & 65mW.. Thats kind of dangerous.

I read that thread. Thats why i made this thread :whistle:

But there is a few problems. If i buy safety goggles, he wont use them, i can pretty much guarantee that.

next: I dont live at home, so lending it would just be mean ..considering im only home a few times monthly.


I guess a 10 mw couldnt hurt too much, but if its 30 - 50 he could go blind -.- and with no IR filter. Could get rather messy >_<.

It has been said many times. Lasers are not toys. Save this one for a friend and buy him a 5mW from focalprice wich is not overpowered I think. Or give it to your mom and explain her what the danger is so the kid can only use it with her.

I would do the last one.
 
ok ok i may have mispoken these are very dangerous i really never let my boys just start shinning thier lasers around whenever they want unless its thier pot modded leadlight
around 14-18 mw ,but only with thier 2.5 od philips safety glasses ............
so please be carefull and use good judgement

I ordered it to my home adress. I'll check out the output on the laser before he gets it.
Is it any stronger than 10mW he wont get it.
And ill speak to my mother, that way he can only use it outdoors, under supervision by an adult.

She's terrified of his red 5mW. She will make sure its used safely :p

Oh and one more thing. Im Norwegian, and (duh) so is my brother. It would be perfect to make him read alittle about the dangers of laser pointers on this forum. But he really doesnt know alot of english, not by far anough to read on an english forum.



Now off topic:
You say laser pointers are not toys, but thats the reason _most_ people buy them, to play with them. Including myself.
I bought a 100mW green one, and the new 200mW dilda. Allthough, I know how harmfull they can be, so I will not play reckless with them. But I will play with them lol. I guess very few people actually buys them for any real use.

I agree. Nothing is worth blinding someone you love. He will never tell the defiance so its best to get him the lowest power laser you can. All kids make mistakes no matter how responsible they are. He might even blind other kids by accident. I would treat it like fireworks. Someone should be there when he plays with it , and don't let him play with the M80s.
 
I think you have pretty much thought out a good plan of what you will do :)
Sorry to "disappoint" you but that laser is very likely over 10mW.
They seem to ship out the same laser no matter what power you order. I have a "5mW" which peaks at 52mW with a 44mW average and a "10mW" which peaks at 47mW with 43mW average. That's almost as powerful as my factory claimed 50mW which has a 49mW average!
 
Please give the 10mw to a responsible adult and buy him a 5mw green. The IR pump is just dangerous and unpredictable. If it spikes he definitely could get a serious eye injury or do it to someone else by mistake.

The 5mw from DX is just as dangerous as the 10mw.
 
I repepat, they are not toys, i wouldn't let him use it unless her mom is with him. And print some articles about laser safety which are strong enough to make the kid be aware of his laser but not much so your mom doesnt think it's a massive destruction weapon :P
