ok so I went to Fry's electronics after many radioshack phone calls (haha) to see if they have resistors. And they have a whole freaking wall of em. BUT, out of the 1ohm ones there were two different kinds. 1/4 w and 1/8 w

WTF? I have not read anything defining this. so which one do i get?

=[ ya and fry's dont have diodes... but i found those at R.S.

Well... I can definitely say that you have NOT done your homework
on the forum...
It seems that there is a member somewhere on the Forum that is
giving away 1 Ohm 1/2 Watt Test Load resistors for FREE...

You will need to do a little research to find him...

How much current do you plan on putting through this diode? I usually stick with the 1/2 watt..

well i would rather get these at a store because it only takes a second. I appreciate the sarcastic remarks though. they make me feel warm and welcome.

And to everyone giving me shit about not researching the forum, how about refining the search a little better. I have read several test load threads, with diagrams and none of them described the resistors other than "1 ohm" so after reading that I had no idea.

And the faq could be more organized and contain more info.

Most forums I have been on "trx450.org" when I am researching things were a bit more user friendly and when I didnt know something i was "helped".

sorry for cluttering the forum with questions on info already known and posted but some of these things could be jammed into a sticky thread like a faq.

I dunno but the faqs and how to's and the people are not very informative on this website and im starting to feel hesitant about asking anything else on this forum.

You don't have to use a 1 ohm resistor, it just makes the calculations the easiest. I am currently using a 10 ohm resistor in my test load because none of the local stores had any 1ohm resistors. Then just use Ohm's law: I (current) = V (voltage)/R (resistance)

I am glad that you appreciate the sarcastic remarks
which make you feel warm and welcome...

since you find it so difficult to find these FREE test load
1 Ohm resistors on the forum... I tried it myself...
(there could be a problem with the [Search] function)

I just did a single [Search]... Entered "test load" and asked
for "show posts"...

Well.... you won't believe it....the 4th Post that came up is
this one....

(The same as in my Sig...)

I just can't see why the [Search] button didn't work for you...

Because you seem to have better luck on "other forums"...
and all the complaints about this one..............
Perhaps this forum is not suited to your requirements...

EASILY find for yourself...

Some of the senior members here get tired of the same old questions being asked by new people ... We could have used a little more info on what you are using the resistor for, probably a test load since you refer also to diodes. (1N400X?)
The 1/4 watt 1 Ω resistor should be fine for a test load for red or violet diodes. You may as well get several of these, they will be useful if you stick with this hobby. Good luck with your build.

many members here (not just senior ones) think it's a great way of showing how cool they are by being rude to newcomers. I agree that the search & FAQ here are way from being userfriendly; I've been here some while and also on many other forums; but here, I'm generally hesitant to use the search because I know it will throw out hundreds of irrelevant posts. Just get used to it.

@lasersbee, he was NOT searching for free resistors, but for info on required wattage.
 
Using common sense and some basic research would aim one at the conclusion
that 1/2 watt Test Load resistors would even be better than 1/8 or 1/4 watt
Test Load resistors... the higher the resistor wattage rating... the less the heat
buildup and more stable the resistance...IMO

Agreed... you could even use a 1/8 watt resistor if you wanted... but I prefer
to play on the "safer" side..

BTW... I suppose if you enter "help" in the search engine you probably would not
get a detailed "test load" result...
In my opinion... the Search engine on this New Forum... is at least 100 times better
than it was on the Old Forum...
Granted... it is far from perfect...
