Dead Li Ion Garbage or?

Are dead Li Ion batteries safe to throw in the trash if there dead or should I find other methods of disposing of them? Dont want to scorch the earth...

No, DO NOT dispose them in the garbage, it is harmful to the environment.

Call your local/regional waste management facility and usually they have drop-in hours for recycling all your electronics, batteries, etc.

I was wondering because I had a dead mikita drill 18v24Wh Li Ion battery I pulled appart because the charger said it was dead I found it had 5 18650's in it and 3 registered under 1v and the other 2 were above 3.5v so I am keeping the 2 good ones and will test em out when I get my chargers. one even powered my 2x cr123 microboost 455 1W for a bit (Yes it still works!)

For the very low voltage ones, you can usually use a cheap charger to put a surface charge onto them, just enough for a good charger to pick it up and start charging normally. I was able to rescue a few bad 14500s i had ordered from Avid Vaper this way.

can I just remove the protection curcuit and charge the unprotected bat at a trickle?
or do I even have to go that far? I was planning on buying a benchtop power supply but I'm betting that if I ordered it today I wouldnt see it till summertime!

I was also told not to try to recharge dead cells due to oxidation... so I really just wanted to get rid of the 3 dead cells...

Play it safe...don't recharge the dead ones...just take them to a recycling place and dispose of them.

Probably depends how long they've been dead... After all the threads I've seen over the different forums of cells blowing up and turning into pipe bombs when sealed in hosts... I think that might be a good idea.

What brand are the lithium cells in the pack ?

Those two 3.5VDC cells are lower capacity, but have greater current output.

Depending on their age, they may still have some useful life.

Check the Internal Resistance in the very top thread,

to see what shape they are in.

I think that will change in the near future.

In nay event its always a good idea to dispose of any type of batteries properly.

And don't forget to individually pack the batteries (tape or ziplock bag) so they will not short out at dispoal site.

Li-ion batteries have a tendency to ignite when crushed. We've had a couple fires here in Seoul from improperly disposed of Li-ion cell phone batteries.
Not much difference in the ones we use. Treat with care and dispose of properly.
