Coleman Max host issue

Hey all! I'm totally new to forums and lasers so bear with me if i'm a total noob and you all hate me for this post.

I ordered a 405 nm diode from stonetek and an aixiz housing. I wanted to put it all in a host that looks decent, but not too pricey. I got the Coleman MAX Led with 6 AA batteries and i got recharable AA batts to hopefully save on price if this all fails.

On to the Problem : I can't get the top off the blasted light. It won't twist, snap, budge or otherwise move. Any ideas?

(btw, i don't have vice grips or anything like that, i'm new to DIY stuff too....)

Thanks!

EDIT : I got a v3 chip (set to 180 ma) as well so i don't burn the diode the moment i hook it up.

I think Mohrenberg would know more about getting the tops off since he sells Coleman MAX kits with heatsinks.

What diode did you order?

A phr-803t can handle around 120ma's compared to other diodes

And BTW, Welcome to LPF! :)

I got the newer 805 diode. according to the test numbers he ran, it can run up to 190 so i figure 180 is a little safer + i don't plan on keeping it on for more than a few seconds at a time.

Since I am so new I'm still trying to figure out how to wire it in my head and figure out how the currents flow. I try to think through the logistics of a project before i actually start it, unfortunately, i feel this is something i may have to play with some before i get it all right.

Well, you can look at a pinout of the diode to find out how to wire it.

Its pretty straightforward :)

Have you contacted moh yet? If not, I'l do it for you

i posted a little note on his "wall", but i have not heard from him yet. I don't have anything but the host at the moment. I was just hoping to figure it out so I can jump right into the build when i get everything.

The only real reason i went with the Coleman Max host is because the 6 AA batteries offered the power output in a non-modified option that i supposedly need to run both the v3 driver i ordered and the laser properly... (the driver says it takes 2.5 volts off the total current and recommends 6 volts minimum for 405 nm)

I would love a cheaper, sleeker alternative, but for a first build, i guess that's not too bad.

exactly which coleman max flashlight is it? there are many varieties.

Some of them have threaded retainer rings inside the barrel that hold the head on, so you've got to go into the barrel with a spanner and unscrew the ring and the head comes loose.

Coleman Max Bubba...

Link : Walmart.com: Coleman Max Bubba: Camping

i can't find it on the coleman website (walmart exclusive?)

If there is a better model that you know of that i can get around the same $20 that will be just as easy / efficient for a 405 nm 805 diode, I'd love the input.

I know mohrenberg has a couple of nice hosts, his guidesman kits are $20, I was gonna buy one of those.

I've been poking around this thing for hours on end.... I'm about to take it back and just get a mini-mag AA led host... hope it holds up to my demands! lol

I've never played around with that coleman flashlight.
I know with the Coleman CR2, the head is on so tight you have to use a vice and a pair of pliers to unscrew it initially.

That might be part of the issue... I know it's supposed to be waterproof, so that could be a part of it.

I think i'm going to get a mini maglite with terralux tailcap button and ***hope*** i can figure this thing out.
