broken electrode

Hi All,

One of the electrodes broke off my laser tube. Can this be repaired? It looks like it may have chipped a little of the glass too. The break is flush with the tube.

I was thinking about trying to solder another electrode on there but I'm not sure if the heat of the solder iron would damage the glass tube :thinking:

Please advise...before I do something stupid

What laser tube? CO2, HeNe, ArgonIon? What electrode?

Gonna need more details and pics, but do NOT try solder to anything in contact with glass, you'll most likely cause more damage.

It's a 40Watt CO2 laser tube and its the Cathode that broke.

How do you post pics? Never done it before

You can also upload/attach it on here to your reply. The file size allowances are pretty generous, but the image must be it below 800x600 in resolution (as they should ALL be anyway).

As long as the electrode isn't recessed, you can wrap a wire around the tube and/or clamp it to the electrode with a rubber band or something like that. It's low current, so the electrical contact doesn't need to be super.
