You can buy some really nice ones from DTR's site and ebay. A lot of the top guys on these forums sell them, just pop them a pm and they can hook you up.

Why? The price.
But, if you really want it, you can buy it from Thorlabs for $3,835 (60 mW version).

Also there you can find 20 mW version, but it would cost you $4,800.00.

What's the purpose of listing that particular diode at that price? Does the manufacturing process really entail THAT much more work?

It is a lot of research and development and they are developed for medical or spectroscopy purposes which can afford to pay those prices. Nobody makes diodes for us enthusiasts. So we have to wait and hope some mainstream product needs a spectacular diode and assault the product with all our might while it is being made.

Ahh makes sense, it's too bad then that no one at these diode manufacturing companies is a laser enthusiast at LPF and bring take prototypes and such into our market for more reasonable prices.
