Anti-Somali pirate laser weapon

why dazzle them? Just shoot them in the face with a large caliber weapon. Do we really even want them alive? All they do is rob and kill people.

oh man, the justice i would unleash if i ruled the world. It would be scary....

ok ok......a quote from the end of the article.

"the beam can be scanned across the entire vessel. This would make it difficult for the attackers to target their weapons, which are usually AK-47 assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenades, he says."

Seriously? Are they trying to market a laser dazzler vs AK-47's and RPG's?
I bet you can mount a .50 machine gun on your boat for the same price as this laser too...

This is for the innocent vessels, not the Navy. Remember, it somehow became illegal for an honest merchant vessel to keep arms for self-protection... there was much discussion about this when that Somali-captured cargo Captain came home.

[just like it is illegal in most UN-nations for civilians to keep-and-bear-arms]

this same tech. is available to police departments, ive seen it in action ... it beams a large/wide swath of beam and it kind of strobes and flickers

it doesn't seem the law is enforced too well if pirates are roaming around. They obviously aren't getting into trouble for having ak-47s and rpgs on their 6 foot boats lol

Yup as Moh said. Shoot them in the face, kill them dead. They chose this path, let them walk it.

I'm a big fan of suffering for people like that.
If you kill them outright, someone takes their place.
If you cause them indescribable pain but let them go back and talk about it.....
History has shown this more effective.
That's like turning rapists into eunuchs, cutting hands off thieves, there are a lot of people willing to risk death, not many willing to risk a month of excruciating suffering ^_^

"theirz a brite lite shining our way. Tiem 2 giv up all that moneyz an go hoam i guess."

I saw a video of the Russian Navy straffing one of those boats with a chain gun not long ago. This would be my preference! As for a laser I'll take the green in 500 mega watt range, BBBBZZZAAAAPPPP!!!!!

This seems so pointless. Surely, they can affort AK's, shitloads of munition and even the occasional RPG. People with such limited purchasing power are surely unable to buy $20 worth of eye protection... not would they be very grateful to see exactly where to aim at :D

Sewer water cannons. Followed by fermenting rat carcasses catapulted onto the boats.
