This is another toy I got off of Len (hakzaw1)
He paid me a visit with some very cool lasers (and ideas)
We spend 3 whole days talking, fixing, showing off lasers.:D

Melles-Groit 05-LGR-173-277 543nm He-Ne W/ 05-LPL-340-865 power supply.
Brand new, in box.
Outputs .95mW seconds after firing up.
Almost 3mW after warming up for 1 hour.
I love this color, and the divergence on this laser is the best I've ever seen.
Haven't had a chance to measure the Div. yet, but I know it is, by far, the best of all my lasers

Shooting the laser from the side,notice the divergence, laser aperture is on left of picture, (that red dot is the silicone plug in the laser's case glowing)

Amazingly bright for 3mW, brightness looks equal to 15-20mW of 532nm.

Nice, I was looking at one of these on the bay a while back. Beautiful gas laser, you just can't replicate the clean beam of a gas laser with diodes :D

543nm He-Ne's are very rare.
They go for about 10X the price of a 632nm. If you can find one!
I've seen less then 10 on eBay in the last year (that weren't priced outrageously), and I believe the only one I've ever seen here (for sale), was the bare tube from Dave.

Maybe rare was the wrong word. The Mona Lisa is rare. Far less numerous and expensive then 632nm although.
Most of my red He-Ne's, I've paid less then $10 each.
This listing is the only green on eBay at the moment. (that I could find)
When you look for a item on eBay , and you find only one listing, I call that "rare".
As far as these tubes in the listing being new, unless they come from the manufacturer, still sealed in the original packaging,
I would not trust them to be new. Anyone can take a old worn-out laser, clean it up and claim it is new.
Been there, bought that, thrown that away:D
 
I would trust those on eBay as being new, they're being sold by Meredith Instruments.

Edit: Not that you were saying they weren't new, but I thought I'd point that out for anyone considering buying one
 
I have one of the Meredith green tubes. It is new and works perfectly. Certainly one good way to get a green hene. It wound up in a housing made of PVC tube.

I missed the Meredith Instruments part in this listing. They are a very trusted name around here. I recant my statement on this post, but watch out for other eBay sellers.
 
The green ones are something special. Red HeNe's used to be fairly common, the standard laser to do optical experiments before diode lasers became available in the visible range.

I suppose in terms of performance they have been entirely blown away by dpss, although you will need to pay a lot extra to get beam specs like the hene's. Cool piece of vintage equipment to have though!
 
Cool laser! So you say it's as bright as a 15-20mW 532nm green? That must mean this wavelength is at least 5 times brighter than 532nm. I never thought such a small difference in wavelength would make such a big difference in visibility.
Is the color of this laser the same as 532nm or is it a little different?

You do understand that at any wavelength a 200 mW is not twice as 'bright' as a 100mW??
 
532, 543 or 555 shouldnt make that much of a difference in visibilty - its only about 10% brighter between 532 and 555. I suppose the difference in color would be visible, especially when viewed side by side, but both 532 and 543 are green. 555 is closer to lime, but not available in lasers afaik.
