Hi there guys.
Im currently in the process of studying for my first build.
I've read over the tutorials and such, and have found a good supplier of tools, but they tend to use different names for items and I was curious what else I need to build my laser.

"Consists of a visible laser diode, brass diode housing, APC (automatic power control circuit) driver, and collimation lens all factory assembled in one small module. 3V operation and consumes approx. 450mA. Overall dimensions of case are approx. 11mm diameter by 34mm long (51mm total length including PCB)."

From what I understand, the diode, heatsink, driver, and lense are all there in one module. Which leaves, a housing and batteries? If so, which batteries would be needed?

I'm sorry for sounding like such a noob but hey, gotta start somewhere :P

All depends on which driver you are using and what diode you have as different combinations of drivers and diodes need different power supplies. Also the host
will be a factor too

Thats in the description, so I'm presuming i need 3Volts?
 
What diode is it? Is it a green module, purple module, red module, etc? But if the module only needs 3V total and 450mA, then find a battery that is 3V and atleast 450mA and you're set :)
 
Looking at the link the OP provided, and reading the description, it sounds like it is just a 523nm green DPSS module. The brass housing is not so much a heatsink but more of a "housing" to hold the diode and crystals. Additional heatsinking would be recommended for any extended duty cycles.

Are you looking to make a lab-style laser or a hand-held?

If hand-held, check out jayrobs FS threads. He has kits that include a heatsink and host, just need to add you module and battery.

Too easy. How would I go about securing the module into the host? Or should it fit flush?
 
Well you just wasted $20. Unless you can find a custom host that will accept a 16mm module... your stuck with just the module. 2x AA are recommended for longer run times, but 2x AAA will work too.
 
The voltage range on the site claims 3-5V. 2xAAs will hold 3V for... not very long. One lithium cell is a better idea. And that module has a low enough power that you shouldn't need any more heat sinking. Anything that'll just hold it in place will be fine. You don't need to buy into this whole $50-custom-copper-heat-sink nonsense.
 
Alright thanks guys, I'll look into some torches that use C batteries, they'd fit the module in there easily.

One more thing, the picture of the module.. it has 2 wires there, opposed to ta contact spring. I have no idea how to connect the module to the batteries. Could anyone shed some light on this or atleast point me in the right direction in terms of this forum?
