So wait wait, let me get this straight (still learning about laser scanner stuff) the DAC is something you can connect to the galvos setup to allow you to connect to a computer, correct? :-/
 
Yes, all DACs work the same way generaly.. a sound card is a DAC.. it takes a digital signal and outputs it as an analog signal (as voltage)

so for instance a normal galvo needs plus minus 5v (-5 to +5 volts) the DAC outputs the voltage in that range based on the digital input.

Since a sound card worke exactly the same way, you can use it instead of an expensive dac.. it just requires a circut board that handles the amplification and things like analog power modulation and TTL blanking.
 
Do DACs normally come with software and stuff, so you can create your own laser shows easily? How much do they normally cost?
