i dont know if i am correct but i think i saw a 52x cd burner? what would the output power of the diode in this be and would it even be usable in a laser? i know that the 52x means that the motor is faster, but would that also ean that the laser is more powerful?

Re: 52x cd rom writer laser

It could be used as a laser, but it'd be IR which means you wouldn't be able to see it, if you don't get proper eyewear you could be burning your retina and not even know it until everything goes black. :o

Re: 52x cd rom writer laser

cd-rom is not a writable format, and its not even a dvd format, look for dvd burning drives.

Thanks

ya, i did mean cd burner... my bad, but what do u think that the output would be?

hi according to IR LD datasheet 48x speed of CD burner can run up to 100mw CW, i run mine @ 140mA max 3.6v input, view the clip on my latest thread, i light a match at 1 1/2 ft. , actually i can do that 1 meter max but it does within 5 to 10 sec. to ignite, in your info, i think 52x CD writer/ burner is much powerful than mine, keep up researching or maybe chido or gazoo can help you about that matter.

Actually, 52x CD burner diodes are 80mW CW tops. They are only rated for about 100mW pulsed, so you can get maybe 100mw from them CW by overdriving it... IMO, just get a 16x. Easier. Less dangerous.

I had lasik done on my eyes, when i had to look at the laser i could smell something burning, doc told me it was "reshapping" my retinas. so a sure tell sign of loosing your sight is a burning smell from the ir before it all goes black. lol

Although this thread is pretty much dead:
CD burner diodes can be driven safely at 250 milliamps (at least none of my 52X diodes died at that current). Their limit is at something around 300mA, I think, but some diodes die at 380mA or so.

Why the hell did you bring up a thread that died over 2 years ago? :wtf:
