PWM vs CW for laser cutting/etching

From what I've read so far, pulsing the diode at low duty cycles allows for higher optical power per pulse. I imagine for cutting, this would be desired as you want to vaporize as much material as possible per pass instead of just burning it. I'm also guessing that at the low speeds required to...

PWM vs CW for laser cutting/etching

What are the trade offs for pulsing a diode to reduce average power vs CW at a lessor power for cutting/etching applications? (I'll be using a 1W 405nm laser diode) I'm building a RepRap style CNC Laser cutter / etcher, primarily for PCB fabrication using the black paint and direct UV exposure...

    Dead BDR-209

Thanks for the replies. Any idea how long of a ramp up period is safe for this kind of diode? I'm hoping to be able to do TTL modulation with the driver. Not sure what frequency I should be shooting for. More for high resolution engraving. I'll also interested in experimenting with analog...

    Dead BDR-209

Just received a BDR-209 in the mail today, awesome service from Jordan. Purchased it for a cnc laser cutter project that I've been designing for weeks, ended up self destructing the diode in a power on test. Not really sure what went wrong :yabbem: Power on test was done with a crude LM317...
