Direct laser PCB etching (through Cu ablation)

Hi Guys! After having accidentally come across this YouTube video, I decided to look back in this old thread. Starting at 3:10, you will see someone (who are likely also a member of this forum) using a 7 * 7W = 49W collimated blue laser bank, to cut and melt a carpenters steel blade. Although...

Direct laser PCB etching (through Cu ablation)

As high as possible without making the FR4 smell / smoke, perhaps by starting in kitchen oven temp, around 200+ C ?

Direct laser PCB etching (through Cu ablation)

Hi V, thanks so much for at least trying. Just make sure you're using a good lens, as it seem from our calculations that we need a very small spot. Also look for any other marks. Roughening up and pre-heating the surface might also help. Wow, thanks for that explanation and great calculation...

Direct laser PCB etching (through Cu ablation)

Good That doesn't sound completely correct. Because Power as measure in Watts are in terms of Energy/Second, so yes, the shorter the pulse, the higher the "measured" power, but in order to do work on the Cu we still need to supply enough energy (in Joules). Which is why we need to keep that...

Direct laser PCB etching (through Cu ablation)

Seeing all the incredible LPF-peoples signatures of amazing lasers, I'd love to see someone here, pull out their >3W blue lasers and focus it on a point onto a Cu-island of a standard FR-4 PCB, and tell me if anything at all happens? Can you see it with the naked eye? With a magnifying glass...

Inverse spin Hall effect: electricity from magnetism

I really love to hear about new science where they don't know what the application would be. We've learned repeatedly from history that every time that happens, whatever it was will be an extremely important everywhere usage, sometime in the future. (Remember the "computer"?) Inverse spin...

    PWM LD Controller Design

I know the forum here is full of drivers, and I've looked at several, only to be more indecisive. Could you recommend one to get me started? I've been tearing out the LD from a bunch of laptop DVD players and like to get started. (I think I've zapped most of them though, since I never took any...

Direct laser PCB etching (through Cu ablation)

Yeah, I've seen that in some absorption spectra graphs. The absorption increases dramatically by increasing the temperature of the substrate. Yes, I know. I lost the original spectra I had saved, but I just found a few new ones. [1] Light Absorption by Metals with Porous Surface Layer Formed by...

Direct laser PCB etching (through Cu ablation)

I haven't tried to do any such calculation for years, so I find it rather strange that it only takes 81 nano Joules to punch a small hole in 35 um Cu layer...

Direct laser PCB etching (through Cu ablation)

Cu Ablation Energy Calculation So I decided to attempt some calculations for Cu ablation. I'm sure there are several mistakes in here, so please try it for yourself. First we need to calculate the energy needed to turn a small isolated PCB spot of Cu into vapor. Then we need to repeat the...

Direct laser PCB etching (through Cu ablation)

This is an experimental and exploratory thread, not a complete project. Background: It is well known to all that there are expensive machines using super-powerful lasers to cut, drill and etch PCBs in the electronic industry. It is less known that the new powers provided by extremely...

    PWM LD Controller Design

Aha, that is interesting. Thanks, this is clearly important to know! So I was reading the following threads: (1) "Laser Diode Technology": (Nice overview!) (2) Single- vs multi-mode beam shapes (some pictures) (3) Single- vs multi-mode laser power divergence In particular the comparative...

Thanks guys! I feel welcome already.

Hyperion LPM + Vritonuzz Data Logger Platform

Re: Hyperion LPM Platform Oh, but I wasn't expecting you to spill your design. I was just curious how it works. Too bad the MCU programmer is expensive, when there are so many other cheap alternatives. Did you develop the firmware yourself? (If yes, then you can always attempt to port to a...

New Full Duplex Radio Chip Transmits and Receives Signals at Once

This is the first time I hear about something like this. Very interesting. "New Full Duplex Radio Chip Transmits and Receives Wireless Signals at Once" "To achieve its efficiency, the new chip had to circumvent a longstanding principle called Lorentz Reciprocity, in which electromagnetic waves...

Hyperion LPM + Vritonuzz Data Logger Platform

Re: Hyperion LPM Platform This is very cool! I was just looking at what these things cost, and oh man, it's gonna take me a long time to get one of those. With your design, there suddenly seem to be some light over the horizon. Questions: a) Why does it take to long for the measurement...

    PWM LD Controller Design

The reason I've chosen to use 405 nm LD is simply that: 1) They (and accompanying optics) are readily available (and thus cheaper). 2) They are still visible, so more secure to use. 3) Their light is highly absorbed by the materials I'm considering. But if the design/price/performance would...

    PWM LD Controller Design

This is a help request, not a finished design. I'm looking for a 405 nm @ 2-5 W, PWM LD driver. Since I'm totally new to the LPF community, I've been looking at loads of various designs both off-the-shelf and DIY circuit designs. However, now I feel even more confused and undecided how to...

Extracting Diodes From Nichia diode bank

Wow, really nice handicraft there! I had to read almost whole thread, and I guess I might be too late to suggest something risky like: 1) First heating the whole array to some temperature X near what you think diode+window can handle, then 2) Use a non-static coolant spray to rapidly cool the...
